Marco Rubio says Trump has yet to make a decision on renewed military action in Iran as peace talks hit a pause

It's complicated

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday that President Donald Trump had not yet decided whether to launch fresh strikes on Iran, amid growing concerns about renewed escalation and delayed peace talks, according to Inquirer.net. Rubio made these comments at a press conference in Atlanta, Georgia, held a day after the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting concluded.

In videos that have circulated on social media, Rubio said, “The President’s observation is that the United States remains the most highly capable military power on Earth. We can achieve military objectives if we seek to. He hasn’t made a decision.” However, he noted that America isn’t taking the situation lightly.

Rubio’s comments on the issue came the same day Iran warned the United States and Israel against launching new attacks, after the United States had issued a similar threat to Iran. According to a Saturday article in The Wall Street Journal, three people briefed on the conversations said the U.S. has told several Gulf Arab countries to prepare for a brief, extreme military campaign after the midterm elections in the United States.

Rubio didn’t want to give out the details

Rubio spoke about Iran several times during the press conference. Notably, he condemned the country’s leaders for “actively and openly” attacking commercial vessels along the Strait of Hormuz.

However, he said the United States was ready to talk with Iranian leaders, though he didn’t provide details. “I’m not going to characterize neither the progress on those talks nor any timeframe on it, other than to tell you that if there is a diplomatic solution, we would be open to it,” Rubio said.

Trump has said that an end to the Iran war will be happening soon

According to an MS Now article, during an interview on Friday with Kansas City radio station KCMO, Trump assured Americans that the war with Iran “is going to be over very soon.” We’re knocking the hell out of them,” Trump said during the interview. Consequently, he predicted that Iran would no longer have nuclear power. “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and they won’t have a nuclear weapon, and that’s going to end very soon,” he said.

During the same event, Trump also dismissed accusations of his starting the war in Iran, alleging that they started it instead. He also said that Iran had “been absolutely horrible to the world” and accused them of killing many Americans.
