Man wakes at 1 a.m. to find his wife lighting a candle in their kids’ room. Then he sees a kitchen knife on the dresser: “freaked him out.”
Hommel and his children are in stable condition.

Northlake, Texas, resident Justin Hommel found himself in a living nightmare when he discovered his wife, Holly Leeann Flores, was in the room their young children share with a kitchen knife. Flores was charged with attempted murder after she allegedly stabbed Hommel and their two children, a three-year-old daughter and a 10-month-old son.
Hommel had been sleeping on the couch before this incident to be closer to his children, as he was concerned about Flores’ behavior, whom he claims was suffering from postpartum depression at this time. The Northlake Police Chief, Robert Crawford, claims that the 911 call from Hommel indicates that he was attempting to reach his children during the call.
However, they were apparently in another room, and Flores was allegedly trying to stab him during his attempts. The call also hears Hommel asking Flores if the situation is due to her postpartum depression, which is drawing comments about how similar the case is to the Lindsay Clancy trial.
Hommel had suspicions about Flores’ behavior earlier that night
Earlier in the night — around 1 a.m. — Hommel claims that he witnessed Flores taking a candle into the children’s room. While this seemed strange to him, it wasn’t until he heard the sounds of a lighter in the bedroom that Hommel grew concerned, according to the affidavit.
Upon investigating, Hommel claims he saw Flores trying to light a candle when he spotted a kitchen knife on the dresser, which freaked him out. Flores closed the door on him, and Hommel allegedly went to sleep, only to wake up to his children crying.
At this point, Hommel claims he knocked on the door, and Flores allegedly attacked him with the knife. Hommel got the knife away from Flores, and he still had it when police arrived to find him with blood on his head and apparent bite marks.
CPS had previous concerns about Flores
The affidavit claims that police responded to the house previously for welfare checks and overdoses, and there’s allegedly a history of welfare concerns with CPS and Flores. However, CPS didn’t offer details about their contact with the family.
Flores was taken into custody after receiving treatment at the hospital and has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. She’s being held at Denton County Jail.
Police found that both children had stab wounds in their chests when they entered the house to detain Flores and conduct a sweep. Hommel and the children were taken to the hospital for treatment. Hommel’s injuries were non-life-threatening, according to the police, and his children are in stable condition, but no further details have been revealed.
