Mads Mikkelsen Teases Indiana Jones 5: “Everything I Wished It to Be”
Indiana Jones 5 is a movie that I still can’t believe is happening. The series, which started in 1981 with the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark and most recently had Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, is one that fans have clung to throughout the decades. I, myself, am the resident The Last Crusade stan and have gotten in many a fight with people (mostly men, let’s be real) about that movie. We’re a strong and passionate bunch, us Indy fans, and to get a new movie with Harrison Ford back as our favorite archeologist feels like some sort of fever dream.
The thing is though we don’t know much about what kind of movie this is going to be—just that James Mangold is directing, Ford is back, and he’s going to be joined by Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (again, this feels like my OWN personal fever dream).
I’m very, very excited about it… I rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark the other day, it is so well-done and so charming, and it’s such great storytelling. So yes it’s a great honor to be part of that franchise that I grew up with… I’m in a lucky position where they let me read the script before. And yes, it was everything I wished it to be, so that was just great.
He went to talk about creating characters and how he thinks that people cast him for specific reasons:
I do think I’m invited in to create a character, I think that everybody wants that. That’s why they pick certain actors that they think can come up with certain things, and it will be a collaboration as it always is. Interesting enough, again a little like Riders of Justice, there is kind of a genre mix in Indiana Jones always. There is something that is a little larger-than-life, almost back to the 30s with a Peter Lorre kind of feel, and then you have Indiana Jones who kind of is a straight man. But he does produce a lot of funny and interesting things, but there are different character genres in some of those films.
While we don’t know that much about Indiana Jones 5, it’s fine. Having both Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge join the cast of the movie just makes it that much more exciting. But going back to the world of Indy with Harrison Ford one last time is enough to have us fans happy about the movie.
Sure, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is nowhere up to par with the rest of the Indiana Jones series, but it’s still a movie with Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. So, getting a fifth movie when we all pretty much thought the series was over? That’s amazing. Mads Mikkelsen and Phoebe Waller-Bridge being involved, with a script that satisfied Mikkelsen’s wishes? That’s just the icing on the cake.
