Look at all the rings! If you consider discs to be rings, and they are technically ring-shaped … anyway: June 28 is when the entire The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be released on Blu-ray — and DVD. Indeed, not all of the 15 discs included in this comprehensive set are Blu-ray, though how badly do you need behind-the-scenes documentaries in 1080p? Rob Bricken at Topless Robot thinks this is a huge gyp:
If I bought Star Wars on DVD and they gave me a VHS of the special features, I’d be furious — same with Blu-ray. Either make the g*ddamned thing on Blu-ray or don’t. And don’t leave your special features in non-anamorphic widescreen, either.
Yeah, but that’s super clunky! Blu-rays and DVDs are the same size, and I’m sure that the ringwraiths would be really self-conscious if we caught them hanging out on set, smoking cigarettes, without their cloaks, in such high definition video.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is currently available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also see the massive list of special features.
