Jimmy Kimmel’s Opening Oscars Monologue Dives Head-First Into Politics and Is More Awesome for It

People often think that being “too political” will make things uncomfortable. But this is the 90th Academy Awards. It’s already a historic night. What better place to celebrate so many women and people of color making history. Not to mention a historic culture shift in entertainment. Check out host Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue above.

Kimmel dove right into the Time’s Up/Me Too moment, cracking jokes at the racist patriarchy’s expense, and he did so with grace and humor. He described Oscar as the perfect man in Hollywood, because he “keeps his hands where you can see them, he doesn’t say an unkind word, and most importantly, no penis.” Oscar is “literally a statue of limitations, which is really important.”

Kimmel also pointed out that with the Time’s Up movement continuing to do its thing, women will have to worry less about harassment in Hollywood. Which is good, because now they’ll “only have to deal with harassment every other place they go.” True statement.

Not included in the clip above? Kimmel announcing a jet-ski as a reward for the evening’s shortest speech as incentive to keep the show shorter, featuring Helen Mirren modelling in front of the jet-ski to present it a la Vanna White. It was pretty spectacular, and reminded us once again that Helen Mirren isn’t even human in her level of attractiveness.

The Oscars are under way, kids! Who are YOU rooting for tonight?
