Stevie Wonder’s ex-fiancée moved into his Hollywood Hills home in 1988. 38 rent-free years later, the singer is suing to evict her

38 years later...

Stevie Wonder is currently taking legal action to remove a woman from his Hollywood Hills property. This situation involves Carmen Efferson, who is reportedly a former fiancée of the musician. According to Rolling Stone, Efferson has lived in the three-bedroom home for nearly 40 years without paying rent.

The arrangement began back in July 1988 based on an oral agreement between Wonder and Efferson. This long-standing situation reached a breaking point recently due to a disagreement over property insurance inspections. The conflict arose when representatives for Wonder attempted to access the home to fulfill requirements for a property insurance renewal.

These representatives tried to enter the house three separate times during July. Efferson refused to let them inside the property during these visits. The situation escalated quickly through email correspondence between Efferson and Wonder’s legal team. She sent a message to lawyer David Huff that included very aggressive language. She told him to “f–k the f–k off” in her response to the request for entry.

Efferson also accused the legal team of harboring discriminatory motives

In her response, she wrote to Huff, “Your rascist [sic] coldblooded ‘white male privilege’ tone (again with you). I am feeling harassed.” She continued her message by stating, “Regarding your ORDERS of entering into the place where I am living, I do not consent. Do not make any attempt to make any kind of contact with me.”

David Huff felt it was necessary to clarify the situation regarding the identity of the person who sent the initial letter. He responded to Efferson, “The author of the letter to you on behalf of Mr. Morris was not me. It was my law partner, Tempestt Tatum, who is neither racist, coldblooded, white nor male.” Stevie Wonder’s legal name is Stevland Hardaway Morris.

The legal team eventually informed Efferson that the original oral agreement was being revoked because of her noncompliance. They provided her with an eviction notice and a deadline to move out by August 27, 2026. This date arrived, but Efferson remained in the home. Wonder’s legal representatives later issued a three-day notice on October 6 for her to vacate the residence for violating the terms of their agreement. The property is valued at nearly $1.8 million.

Wonder is now seeking Efferson’s removal

Wonder is now asking a judge in a Los Angeles superior court to order her removal from the house. He is also seeking $600 in damages. This specific amount represents the penalty he currently owes due to the lapsed property insurance renewal.

The legal team claims they offered Efferson several opportunities to allow the inspectors inside, but she declined every time. When she allegedly threatened to call the police during further communication, the legal team decided to move forward with the formal eviction process.

Wonder has lived in various homes throughout the Los Angeles area over the years. The New York Post reports that he is currently busy with his ‘Songs in the Key of Life Performances – 50th Anniversary’ Tour. The Motown icon has been married to Tomeeka Bracy since 2017.

Efferson’s refusal to allow a standard insurance inspection serves as the primary catalyst for this court case. Legal proceedings are often slow, but the goal here is a firm move-out order. The court will now have to decide how to handle the end of this long-term oral agreement.

This case serves as a reminder of how informal agreements regarding property can lead to major complications later on. While the arrangement worked for 38 years, the breakdown of communication has led to this public legal battle. For now, the house on Oak Glen Drive remains occupied by Efferson despite the ongoing lawsuit.
