DoorDash driver complains about customers tipping $1. Then they get comments after claiming the platform’s base pay is tiny: ‘$2 is a joke’

A DoorDash driver recently sparked a heated discussion on Reddit by calling out customers who leave tips as low as $1 or $2. The original post, titled “So sick of people tipping $1 or $2. How pathetic do you have to be? Do these people have no shame?” appeared in the r/DoorDash_Dasher subreddit on October 14.

This driver is clearly frustrated with the current state of pay, especially when customers shift the blame for low earnings onto the company while simultaneously tipping poorly. At the time of writing, the post had already garnered 594 comments from other people weighing in on the issue. This alone already proves that he is not alone in this situation.

One commenter pointed out that DoorDash avoids educating customers about how payment works because it benefits the company if drivers stay quiet. The public often lacks a clear understanding of the financial breakdown behind every order.

With this, users identified delivery and service fees as a major issue about DoorDash

A recurring theme in the comments is the confusion surrounding delivery and service fees. Many customers assume that a delivery fee goes directly into the driver’s pocket, which leads them to believe that a large tip is not necessary. One user noted, “They figure, why tip $10 when he’s already getting the delivery fee.” This person even suggested that companies should not be allowed to charge a delivery fee if that money is not being passed on to the person doing the work.

The conversation also touched on the misconception that drivers receive a significant portion of the fees collected by the platform. In reality, drivers are often relying on tips to supplement a base payment that can be as low as $2.

One commenter explained that while they do not want to fully blame DoorDash for this, the company needs to do a better job of educating users. They compared the situation to platforms like Amazon, where users might expect free delivery, leading to unrealistic expectations about what a delivery service should cost.

DoorDash says Dasher pay can include base pay, promotions and customer tips

For Dashers paid per offer, base pay ranges from $2 to $10 or more, depending on factors such as the offer’s estimated time and distance, as well as how desirable it is to Dashers. DoorDash says base pay does not change based on the customer’s tip. Promotions can add to an offer’s earnings. DoorDash lists Peak Pay, Challenges, Delivery Streaks and Boosts as examples of additional incentives that may apply under certain conditions.

Tips are added on top of base pay and promotions. DoorDash says Dashers receive 100% of customer tips, and gives the example of a $6 base-pay offer becoming $11 when the customer adds a $5 tip. Customers can generally tip at checkout or after delivery.

DoorDash’s pay model helps explain why delivery fees and Dasher earnings are not the same thing: the company says pay is made up of base pay, promotions and customer tips. While tips add to a Dasher’s earnings, base pay is determined by factors such as time, distance and offer desirability, and not by the tip amount. That distinction is at the heart of the Reddit debate, where Dashers called for better pay and commenters argued that customers need a clearer picture of how the system works.
