Jay Smooth on Donald Trump: “I Don’t Know That We Will Be Okay. But What I Know Is That We Will Resist.”

Cultural commentator Jay Smooth puts out videos very rarely, but whenever he does, it’s always worth pausing everything to watch them. In the early hours of today, shortly after the U.S. presidential election results became solidified, he released this video titled “Trump’s America: This is What Happens Now.”

We are still reeling, at The Mary Sue today. We are working on some long posts for you today with our reactions. In the meantime, though, Jay Smooth’s video serves as a concise and much-needed sentiment for those of us who live in the States and face these unimaginably devastating election results.

Here’s some excerpts from the video:

“I’m not gonna stand here and say, ‘we’re gonna survive.’ I’m not gonna say, ‘we will be okay.’ How can I say that, to immigrants and Muslims and women who want control of their bodies? … I don’t know that we will survive. I don’t know that we will be okay. But what I know is that we will resist. We come from a tradition of resistance. Just as surely as America’s history is the story of that hate, it is also the story of our resistance.”
