Her Edinburgh Apartment Was Built on a Gallows Hill. Then Her Dog Started ‘Exploding Blood’
Demons, executions, and murders all in one place.
Alexandra (@houselore) told TikTok her “real-life horror story” with an Edinburgh apartment she found on Rightmove. While living there, Alexandra and her husband discovered a few unsettling details that would make most renters immediately leave.
“I debated for a long time whether or not I should even tell the story, but then, strangely, fate stepped in,” Alexandra told TikTok. She and her husband were initially living in Linlithgow and wanted to move closer to town. Hence, the couple searched for an apartment in Edinburgh. They found a three-bedroom, two-bathroom flat on Rightmove. While it was old, the couple found it lovely and decided to move in.
“The strangeness started almost immediately,” Alexandra recalled. Her husband, whom she noted wasn’t spiritual, spoke to her one morning. He looked shaken and told her that he had seen “a demon” in the mirror across from their bed.
“He didn’t seem to want to describe it,” Alexandra stated. Nevertheless, they both dismissed it as a bad dream. But then, the activity in the house didn’t subside. Her husband told her he saw a shadowy figure standing across the hall one night when he got up to get water. Another night, he also said he couldn’t sit up because he felt pressure on his chest.
“There was, again, a demon-like figure sitting on him,” Alexandra described. She said that before moving to this house, her husband had never experienced anything paranormal. She was convinced that her new home had something to do with what her husband was experiencing.
Rightmove didn’t add this detail in the rental’s description.
“Being a historian, I decided to see what was up with this place, because I was starting to get feelings,” Alexandra said. When she researched the location, she found out the apartment complex was once a house built for a merchant in the late 1700s. But then, Alexandra found a piece of information that made her stomach turn.
“It was built on what was previously known as a gallows hill. We were literally on a site where hundreds of people had been hanged,” she explained. Alexandra didn’t stop digging for information, but then strange things started happening to their dog. She described Tavish, their dog, as “sweet” and without issues.
“Out of literally nowhere, we came home one day, and there was blood all over the floor,” Alexandra recalled. When they found their dog, she claimed he was “exploding blood” from his rear. They took him to the vet, and Alexandra said they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Tavish was saved and made a full recovery. However, five months later, Alexandra said they came home to the same scene once more.
“So now, we got husband’s ghosts and sleep demons. We’ve got my dog suddenly, randomly exploding blood and nearly dying on two occasions. And then it started hitting me,” Alexandra said.
Whatever was in that apartment came for her.
“I started feeling unwell after this,” Alexandra claimed. There were days she couldn’t leave the bed, feeling constantly dizzy and exhausted. She thought it was all in her head until she met the apartment handyman.
“I’m surprised you lasted this long,” the handyman allegedly told Alexandra and her husband. The handyman explained that his assistant was helping him renovate the flats when he decided to stay overnight in Alexandra’s unit. But during the first night, the man allegedly broke out of the door, screaming. After that, his assistant decided to stay with him instead. Alexandra and her husband were horrified by the handyman’s story, but he added another hair-raising detail.
“Oh yeah, you didn’t know about the murders,” the handyman allegedly said. Alexandra and her husband had not known about the crimes that allegedly took place on the property, much like this South Carolina woman who found out about her rental’s dark history through the mailbox.
According to the handyman, several murders took place. The most recent murder allegedly happened in the ’80s. An altercation between two men took place, and then one of them pushed the other out of the window. The man did not survive the fall. Alexandra’s husband jokingly commented, “At least that one didn’t die inside the flat.”
But it wasn’t the mention of the murders that pushed the couple out of the supposedly haunted apartment. When Alexandra started getting nosebleeds out of nowhere, the family packed up and left. They didn’t even last a year, and Alexandra said she has tried to put the episode out of her mind. Then she had a dream and decided to look at the apartment again on Rightmove.
“It turns out this apartment is back on the market, folks. So, if you would love to live in a murder flat on a gallows hill where multiple people have died, this too could be yours,” Alexandra joked. However, she doesn’t recommend it.
