‘Grenell is Wrong’: As Trump Threatens Stringent Tariffs on Canada, Adam Kinzinger Spotlights Canada’s Sacrifices for the USA

After the United States and Canada failed to reach a trade deal acceptable to both sides, President Donald Trump has once again attacked Canada. On Truth Social, he said that starting Saturday, he would impose a 50 percent tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement on August 21, 2026, that he had decided to pause ongoing talks between Canada and the U.S. because he was dissatisfied. He also said he had instructed the negotiators to return to Ottawa.
He added, “They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.” Carney also said his administration intended to handle the U.S.’s rigorous tariffs “on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods” by matching them “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers and businesses.
The Canada-US fallout has drawn the attention of many Americans, including Adam Kinzinger, a frequent critic of Trump. Sharing a social media post by Richard Grenell, the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions, who suggested that Canada pay its “NATO obligations” as Americans are “sick” and “tired of paying the bills,” Kinzinger wrote, “Canada had 138 killed and thousands wounded in Afghanistan fighting for the US after 9/11, and supported the invoking of Article 5. Grenell is wrong and knows this.”
Trump’s tariffs on Canada illicit response from lawmakers
Several people expressed their discontent on social media about Trump’s comments on Canada. Most of these voices were Democratic lawmakers, but some Republicans also spoke out.
Democratic Senator Patty Murray took to X and dissed Trump’s tariffs and wrote, “Canada is NOT the 51st state. Trump owes our friends and neighbors an apology for nearly 2 years of his boorish insults and jeers…” Representative Haley Stevens, who recently contested and lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed, also spoke on the issue.
On X, Stevens wrote, “For centuries, Michigan and Canada have been partners, allies, and close friends. Trump’s reckless and unnecessary trade war is blowing that up and making life more difficult for millions of Americans. You don’t rob your neighbor. This trade war must end so we can get our economy back on track. I will keep pushing to block Donald Trump’s tariff regime and keep fighting to lower costs for Michiganders.”
Senator Susan Collins of Maine said that the “on-again/off-again trade talks” between the U.S. and Canada cause increased expenses, risks, and instability for Maine businesses. She warned that if the Administration enacts these tariffs, Maine families will face higher costs, as businesses will likely shift the tariffs’ burden onto consumers through price hikes.
She also called on “both sides” to resume negotiations. She emphasized that the Administration should recognize how tariffs could harm Maine’s businesses, communities, and families, and strive for a fair deal with our Canadian neighbors.
