Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels has always helped various star cast members get their own TV series, from Aidy Bryant’s Shrill to Kenan Thompson’s eponymous comedy show. Therefore, it seems only fitting that his golden boy, Pete Davidson, is finally getting his own show, too.
Coming onto his 8th year with SNL, Pete has certainly grown, both as a performer and as a public figure. He’s gone from their “resident young person” to one of Hollywood’s most talked-about names, yet has always maintained a sense of groundedness in chaos that Lorne undoubtedly plans to showcase in this series. Here’s everything we know about it so far.
“Bupkis”
The show is still in the very early stages of development, with Pete confirmed as the lead but no other cast members announced yet. It will be a show largely based on his life and the things he’s gone through, which could mean a number of different scenarios: There could be A-list girlfriends, beefs with sports stars and politicians alike, and hopefully more than a handful of cameos from his sweet Ma. Ultimately, they want it to be a “raw, unflinching, fictionalized” portrayal of his life, for better and for worse.
The working title of the show is “Bupkis”—a Yiddish word that means, quite literally, “nothing.” It seems to lean a little hard into Davidson’s portrayal as “just some guy” who happened to stumble into fame, so I hope the show will give him at least a little credit for his own talents. Thankfully, the show is also in the hands of Dave Sirus and Judah Miller, both of whom have worked with Davidson in the past (the former notable for his writing on The King of State Island).
Then again, much really does remain to be seen. The next Kardashian feature will release beforehand, where Kim plans on talking about her relationship with Pete, so much will probably change before Bupkis is released. In other words, all is up in the air, yet held with great care. As a longtime Pete fan, I hope Bupkis gives him a chance to prove his chops and show off sides of himself that he hasn’t had a chance to show yet.
