Well, it looks we aren’t the only ones ready to move on to a new James Bond. As it turns out, current James Bond, Daniel Craig, is way over playing the superspy.
In an interview with Time Out London, Craig is very honest about how he feels about the possibility of doing another Bond film after Spectre, which comes out next month here in the US. He says:
Now? I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists. Not at the moment. Not at all. That’s fine. I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.
For at least a year or two, I just don’t want to think about it. I don’t know what the next step is. I’ve no idea. Not because I’m trying to be cagey. Who the f— knows? At the moment, we’ve done it. I’m not in discussion with anybody about anything. If I did another Bond movie, it would only be for the money.
This is kinda understandable. It’s easy to forget that Craig is actually, you know, an actor who’s interested in the craft of acting and has played really dramatic roles in films like Munich and Defiance as opposed to just, you know, The Guy Who Plays James Bond Right Now. He has a hankering to devote himself to different acting pursuits, saying about the acting experience of playing Bond:
The best acting is when you’re not concerned about the surface, and Bond is the opposite of that. You have to be bothered about how you’re looking.
However, this doesn’t mean that he doesn’t get how important James Bond is to pop culture and to fans. He’s proud of the work he’s done, he just doesn’t feel like he’s the one that needs to do it anymore:
All I care about is that if I stop doing these things, we’ve left it in a good place and people pick it up and make it better. just make sure you’re great. You’ve got to push yourself as far as you can. It’s worth it, it’s James Bond.
So….Idris Elba, amirite? *sigh*
