Midwest woman goes to Walmart with her two-year-old, then a man dressed as a cowboy comes asking ‘How much for the child?’

I would’ve lost it.

A Midwestern mother allegedly went through an infuriating ordeal at Walmart while she was shopping with her baby. An elderly stranger dressed like a cowboy reportedly approached her at the checkout register and repeatedly asked if she would sell her two-year-old son.

Content creator Shelbie (@simplyshelbie_) recounted the encounter in a TikTok video recorded from her vehicle while sitting in a school pick-up line. She explained that roughly an hour earlier, she had run into her local store with her toddler to pick up a few essential items on her shopping list.

The routine shopping trip allegedly escalated into an uncomfortable exchange when a stranger approached her from behind at the register and posed an unsettling question regarding her child.

A stranger dressed like a cowboy interrupted checkout

While browsing the aisles, Shelbie said that she had been on a video call with her mother. She then noticed a display of themed Lightning McQueen beanbag chairs and insisted on purchasing them for her family. So, Shelbie loaded the items into her cart and made her way toward the front of the store.

Throughout the walk to the registers, several older shoppers allegedly stopped to comment on her toddler. Shelbie noted that it made her slightly uncomfortable as an introverted shopper. “I’m not a people person… I don’t like to be spoken to in public,” she explained. “You mind your business, I will mind mine.”

However, the mood shifted dramatically once she reached the checkout lane. While she was actively paying with her son seated on one beanbag chair and holding the second, an older man reportedly approached her from behind and tapped her shoulder.

“He’s dressed as a freaking cowboy: cowboy hat, pearl snap, boots, the whole shebang,” Shelbie said, describing his attire.

The man repeatedly asked to purchase her toddler

Without any introductory pleasantries, the man allegedly looked directly at her and asked: “Ma’am, how much for the child?” Stunned by the remark, Shelbie turned around and asked him to repeat himself, hoping she had misheard the question.

“I look at him, I said, ‘Excuse me?’ ‘How much to buy the small child?’ Did you really just ask to buy my kid? Whoa! Who thinks that’s okay, for one?” The second inquiry left Shelbie visibly upset. She questioned why any adult would consider asking a parent to purchase their toddler an acceptable form of small talk or humor in a retail store.

While unconventional comments and attempted jokes are not uncommon in small-town retail settings, Shelbie noted that she was completely unsure of how to respond in the moment. She concluded her video wondering whether the interaction was an awkward regional joke or simply an inappropriate boundary violation.
