Dad of 4 was caught reaching through a teen’s airplane seat to touch her. Now he’s been convicted

Absolutely vile.

A Massachusetts father has been convicted of abusive sexual contact after a 17-year-old passenger recorded his fingers reaching through the seat in front of him on a JetBlue flight, giving investigators key evidence in the case.

Jonathan Alan Lefman, 48, was found guilty following a three-day jury trial, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. The incident happened aboard a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Boston on August 30, 2024. Lefman was traveling with his wife and four children.

Prosecutors said Lefman repeatedly reached between the back and bottom of the seat occupied by the teenager and touched her buttocks without permission. At one point, she noticed his reflection leaning between the seats on the screen in front of her. She eventually used her phone to record his fingers coming through the gap in her seat.

She recorded the evidence from her seat

According to an FBI agent’s affidavit, the teenager initially thought the man behind her was stretching because passengers can get tired during long flights. She later realized, she told investigators, that he was touching her and tried moving forward and sideways to avoid him.

The affidavit says the final recorded incident happened after the plane landed in Boston, while passengers were waiting to leave. The teenager moved forward in her seat and filmed the area behind her. The video showed fingers reaching through the gap between the seatback and the seat bottom and moving around for several seconds.

She also recorded a video of the man leaving the plane. After they disembarked, an adult female relative who had been traveling in a different row reported the incident to a JetBlue supervisor and confronted Lefman, showing the video as evidence.

The relative said Lefman claimed he had been stretching and apologized when confronted. During a subsequent interview with investigators, Lefman said he did not recognize the fingers shown in the video.

Now he’s facing sentencing in January

U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley said the verdict held Lefman accountable for repeatedly sexually abusing a minor during a commercial flight. “No one should have to fear being sexually assaulted, whether in the air or on the ground,” Foley said in a statement. Previously, separate incidents also detailed groping and unwanted incidents in-flight.

Ted E. Docks, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, praised the teenager’s courage and emphasized that passengers should be safe in confined public spaces. He said the FBI was committed to protecting children and bringing people who exploit or abuse them to justice.

Lefman is scheduled to be sentenced on January 12, 2027. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of two years, along with supervised release and a possible fine of up to $250,000. The judge will determine the sentence under federal law and sentencing guidelines.
