She boarded a night flight to Maine. Then her seatmate made an inappropriate request: ‘I’m the luckiest guy on this plane’
They were unlucky to be seated next to him.
Steph Bohrer (@stephbohrer) is no stranger to weird encounters during her flights. But while on a night flight headed from Charleston, South Carolina, to Portland, Maine, Bohrer alleged that her seatmate harassed her and another female passenger beside him.
“I know that I have so many of these that people are just not going to believe me anymore,” Bohrer told TikTok. Inside the plane, Bohrer said she was assigned a window seat, which she was excited for. When she saw her row, 21, there was a young woman on the end and a man in the middle. Bohrer told the other passengers that she was supposed to sit in the window seat, and the young woman stepped aside.
Instead of standing up, Bohrer alleged the man said, “Come on over.” She further claimed that he made a tapping motion on his lap. Bohrer commented, “I think he was just making a weird, perverted joke, and he’s going to get up. That sucks, but he’s joking.” Nevertheless, Bohrer felt uncomfortable, and she made eye contact with another man in the back row. She said the man in the back made a weird face because he witnessed the awkward interaction. Regardless, the man who commented was still in the middle seat, buckled in. He allegedly didn’t make way for Bohrer to get into her seat.
The start of a long flight
“Okay, are you coming over?” the man allegedly asked her. Bohrer assumed he wanted her to squeeze in to reach her seat. She told him that she didn’t think she’d fit because his knees were touching the seat in front. The man allegedly clarified, “So, you want me to get up?”
Bohrer was perplexed by the man’s reaction. She commented, “Is this your first time on a plane? Is this your first day on Earth?” She kept her frustration in and told him, “Yes, please.” Eventually, the man got up and made room for Bohrer. She and the other woman traded awkward glances as Bohrer got in. But getting into her seat was just the first hurdle. Bohrer alleged that the man wouldn’t stop making inappropriate comments to her and the other girl.
“We feel we have solidarity. We feel that we’re in this awkward situation,” Bohrer said about herself and the other girl. Although they didn’t know each other, the man allegedly kept making weird comments.
“I’m the luckiest guy on this plane. Usually you don’t want to sit in the middle seat, but I’m between you two ladies. I’m the luckiest guy on this plane,” the man allegedly said. Bohrer claimed the man was “screaming” those words for everyone to hear. She tried to endure his antics by putting in AirPods, pretending to text on her phone. But then the man allegedly turned to her and called her out.
“Your generation… All you do is text. You can’t even get on the airplane without texting,” the man allegedly remarked. Bohrer did not want to speak to the man, but she chose to ignore him. Conversely, this Delta Air Lines passenger didn’t let her seatmate get away with a microaggression, and it shamed him into silence. But Bohrer didn’t feel safe standing up and saying something because the man kept heckling her and the other woman. She lamented the next two hours ahead, until a flight attendant came along.
Someone else reported the man on their behalf
The flight attendant told her and the other woman to go with him. Again, the man allegedly refused to stand up for Bohrer, and the flight attendant had to make the man move out of the way.
“The man that I made eye contact with in the row behind me reported the man in my row for harassing us,” Bohrer said. Because of that report, she and the other woman got upgraded seats. When they got to their new seats, Bohrer and the other woman immediately started talking about the unnerving experience. After the flight, they rushed through the airport, not wanting the man to catch up to them.
Bohrer thought she could put the incident behind her and spent four days in Maine. While at the boarding gate, Bohrer said she saw the same man once more. Thankfully, however, he was not seated next to her for the return flight.
