Cincinnati Woman Buys Dairy Queen’s $5 Mystery Bag. Then She Sees the Unexpected Disclaimer: ‘Should I Get 1 or 2?’
Mystery bags can be hard to pass up, especially when they only cost $5. You don’t know exactly what you’re paying for, but sometimes that’s what makes the deal tempting.
Of course, there’s always a risk. You could end up with something you love, or something you never would have ordered. And when the bag feels surprisingly heavy, walking away might be even harder.
That’s the choice Cincinnati TikToker Katie Harris (@katieharris_0) faced after spotting a $5 mystery bag at Dairy Queen. But the small disclaimer on the bag made the deal even more unusual. “Should I get 1 or 2?” Katie wondered in the video, which has received 2.7 million views.
For $5, would you take the chance?
In the video, Katie finds several brown mystery bags sitting inside a Dairy Queen freezer. According to the label, each costs $5 and contains two to three DQ treats. But customers don’t get to know exactly which treats they’re taking home.
The note explains where the mystery items come from. They may have been made during employee training, or a worker may have accidentally made a duplicate, the wrong flavor, or the wrong size.
The store calls the mystery bag “a steal of a deal,” although there’s one other important disclaimer. The label warns that the contents may contain peanuts, tree nuts, or gluten.
For Katie, the weight of the bag seems to make the $5 gamble even more tempting. “Either way, this mystery bag of a steal deal is heavy,” she remarks. “I wonder what’s in there.”
It’s unclear whether customers can find these mystery bags at Dairy Queen locations nationwide. Dairy Queen restaurants are independently owned and operated franchises, so what customers find at one location may not necessarily be offered at another.
Still, the idea of paying less for food without knowing exactly what you’ll receive isn’t unusual. Shoppers have been willing to take a chance on discounted surprise food bags before, especially when the low price makes the gamble feel worth it.
And sometimes that gamble pays off. Mystery food bags can be worth much more than their discounted price, giving customers another reason to accept a little uncertainty in exchange for a cheaper deal.
Some viewers already thought Katie should take the chance. “$5 for that ??? Lmao SOLD !! I would have bought that,” one person commented. Another jokingly summed up the offer as, “buy our f*ck ups for $5,” while someone else told her, “Stop wondering and buy it.”
Viewers were frustrated that Katie didn’t reveal what was inside. “people showing mystery bags and not showing us what’s in it is the bane of my existence,” one person wrote. Another joked, “Great… we’ll never know.”
Katie finally opens the mystery bags
Viewers didn’t have to wonder forever. Katie later revealed they bought three bags, answering her question, “Should I get 1 or 2?” Her family counted eight ice creams, fitting the promised two to three treats per bag.
Among them were mint chocolate chip, cookies and cream, cotton candy, and chocolate with cookies and cream. One flavor was harder to identify, with Katie’s child guessing pistachio while Katie thought it was pecan praline.
The three mystery bags cost $15 before tax, and Katie’s family says they spent around $16.50 altogether. That works out to a little over $2 per treat for the eight ice creams they received. But getting eight treats doesn’t guarantee that every flavor will be a winner. As the family samples the different cups, one person admits they tried three and “Didn’t like them.”
Not every flavor was a hit, but for anyone who isn’t too picky, several surprise treats for $5 may still be worth the gamble. And once Katie showed what was inside, the mystery was finally solved.
