Beefing Over a Barbecue: Viral Landlord-Tenant Showdown in Canada Ends in Police Arrest
A barbecue disagreement between a landlord and tenant involved rock-throwing, a missing door, and eventually, police.
A garden barbecue between a Canadian tenant and his friend apparently came with more beef than either had planned. What began as an argument with his landlady over using a grill escalated into a much larger landlord-tenant dispute involving allegations of repeated entry, changed locks, a missing door, and eventually, the landlady’s arrest.
The confrontation has gone viral through a series of videos posted by the tenant under the Instagram account Tiwana Farm Survivor, which currently has over 61,000 followers. Business Today reports that the clips document his dispute with a woman identified as Raj Tiwana, beginning with a disagreement over his use of a barbecue in the garden.
The videos document the tenant’s account and portions of the confrontations, though they do not independently establish all of his allegations against Tiwana. Still, what started as dinner with a friend clearly produced enough smoke without anyone needing to light another grill.
This Barbecue Had More Beef Than Expected
The initial dispute reportedly began when Tiwana objected to the tenant using a barbecue while having dinner with a friend. In footage shared online, she pointed to brown marks on a wall and said she needed to protect the property from damage.
The tenant, who identified himself as 50 years old, argued that he had a right to invite friends over and repeatedly asked Tiwana to leave. She also objected to his friend filming their exchange as the confrontation became increasingly heated.
Things apparently weren’t done cooking. Another video from the same day showed Tiwana removing food from the grill as the tenant accused her of trying to intimidate them. She then appeared to use a piece of wood to push food from the barbecue while saying she would not allow them to cook on her property and threatening to call the police.
The argument might sound like an unusually intense disagreement over dinner etiquette, but the tenant alleges the barbecue incident was only one part of a much larger pattern of harassment at the rental property.
Posted with the hashtag “slumlord” in another clip, Tiwana appeared to enter the tenant’s home before throwing rocks in his direction as he repeatedly told her to leave. During the confrontation, she also appeared to grab a container and strike his friend while questioning why he was at the property.
Tiwana reportedly entered his unit without notifying him and changed the locks. Another video showed the entrance to the rental apparently missing its door entirely, which he claimed had been removed and left him unable to properly secure his belongings.
At that point, the barbecue was arguably the least of anyone’s problems in this high ‘steaks’ dilemma.
The Landlord-Tenant Beef Didn’t End With Dinner
Other footage showed several men entering the property while the tenant questioned why they were inside his unit and insisted they did not have permission to enter. In a later post, he claimed the property had been broken into for the third time and that the door had been completely removed.
“My unit has been broken into for the third time, the door was removed right off. Just recording this for the police for now,” he said in one video.
The viral landlord-tenant dispute eventually reached authorities. In a subsequent video shared by the tenant, police officers could be seen arriving at Tiwana’s home and telling her she was under arrest. Tiwana appeared confused and asked whether she could call her daughter before officers handcuffed her and escorted her to a police vehicle.
The available footage does not establish the complete circumstances surrounding the dispute or independently prove every allegation the tenant has made. However, it does document just how far the conflict had travelled from the garden dinner where it apparently began.
What started with an argument over what was cooking outside ultimately became a much bigger dispute over what was happening inside the rental. Whatever comes next, this saga offers one lesson in barbecue etiquette: constantly getting up in someone’s grill comes with a serious risk of getting burned.
