Airline passenger claims woman next to her cried for three hours after she refused to switch seats: ‘ultimate white tears’

I'd cry if I was in the middle seat too

A travel blogger who refused to switch seats with the woman next to her faced a long flight home after the other passenger turned on the waterworks. In a viral Instagram post, Tomiko Harvey claimed that the woman next to her cried for three straight hours after Harvey refused to give in to her request.

In the viral Instagram post, Harvey claimed that she refused to give up her aisle seat for a woman sitting in the less-desirable middle seat on a long-haul flight from Istanbul to Washington, D.C. The reason the woman later gave for wanting to switch seats was that she “missed her husband.” When Harvey refused, the woman began crying what the blogger called the “ultimate white tears,” making an already 10-hour-long flight, no doubt, feel even longer.

The crying apparently continued for three hours. Eventually, Harvey, who was flying back from Kazakhstan after her father’s passing, asked the woman if someone had died, but she said no: “She just missed her husband and whose shoulder would she lay her head on.” Harvey claimed that the husband was two rows up “with his headphones on, sleeping in heavenly peace the entire flight.”

“She really wanted me in a middle seat for 10 hours so she could lay her head on his shoulder,” Harvey wrote. When the flight was over, the blogger said she congratulated the woman for making it the whole 10 hours without her husband and jokingly claimed that the whole experience had made her re-evaluate her own marriage “because I clearly do not love my husband enough.”

Switching seats on a flight can be a nuisance

It’s not uncommon for people to ask to switch places with other passengers on a plane, especially when they want a more desirable seat such as a window or an aisle. While that’s not necessarily the case with the woman Harvey encountered, people can have ulterior motives when it comes to switching.

Despite the supposed flood of tears, Harvey had little sympathy for the woman, and neither did her followers. “They should have booked their damn seats together,” one commenter wrote. Meanwhile, another commenter speculated that the husband “booked those seats without her knowing it so that he could have a peaceful flight.”

Another person claimed that the couple had booked the middle seats to get the cheapest fare (as individual seats can differ in price), so Harvey was well within her rights to refuse to give up the seat she paid for (which likely cost more) so that another passenger who likely paid less.
