Marvel Isn’t Messing Around With the Captain Marvel Trailer

Recommended Videos

Recently, we were all hoping for the outside chance that our first official look at Captain Marvel, which came by way of Entertainment Weekly, would bring us a trailer and finally let us see this character, and movie, in action. That wasn’t to be, but with the trailer finally released this morning on Good Morning America, it seems to have been worth the wait.

This is no short “teaser” with only a few obscure shots, just to whet fans’ appetites. This is a full-blown, almost two solid minutes of Captain Marvel footage, and it certainly feels like a new beginning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s helped along by Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel first showing up by crashing into a Blockbuster Video, setting up the movie’s 1990s setting, as well as a younger Nick Fury setting up an overarching story that precedes our current core team of Avengers.

It feels like we’re (being kind and) rewinding a bit, pulling back to see the bigger picture of the MCU that the current Avengers are unaware of, and putting Captain Marvel at the forefront as we move into that new era.

Still, since it’s a first trailer for a movie that doesn’t come out until March, we still don’t get much by way of story here. We’re introduced to Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and her ambiguous past, as well as the idea of an alien war making its way to Earth, but otherwise, it’s a pretty standard superhero trailer—Nick Fury even delivers a disaffected line about an alien invasion and a big car chase.

But he follows that up by saying he was reinvigorated by meeting her, and so are we. It’s great to finally see Carol Danvers get that big, inspiring superhero treatment, when we’ve been left waiting for this movie for years, through multiple delays. It’s also great to see moments like this:

Brie Larson's Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers at all ages in life

And it features Carol punching an old lady, which is likely due to the invasion of Earth by the shapeshifting Skrulls, since the movie’s plot will be driven by the Kree-Skrull war. (Although I do hope Carol is right about her being a Skrull and didn’t just accidentally punch an innocent woman.)

We also got a look at some very ’90s pagers in use, albeit not as fancy as the one Nick Fury activated in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War. They’re definitely teasing our desire to see how this all connects to the second half of that story, and it’s working. We’re more ready than ever for the MCU to take this next big step, with Carol Danvers leading the way.
