Last month at C2E2, Marvel editor Tom Brevoort confirmed that the return of Jessica Jones to her own follow-up comic series was pretty much all but inevitable, mostly hinging on the availability of the original creative team consisting of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artists Michael Gaydos and David Mack.
Now, Bendis himself has announced–in lieu of an official-official announcement–that we should be on the lookout for a sequel to “Alias”, which introduced Jessica Jones to the comic world.
At Emerald City Comicon, Bendis said that as of right now the timeline will be dictated by when he will be able to fit it in–most likely, it’ll have to wait until after “Civil War II” (which Jessica will be making an appearance in) and after Gaydos finishes work on a separate graphic novel:
“After ‘Civil War II’ you can look for a return. I genuinely think you’ll be surprised by what we do in the first issue. I pitched it actually to Melissa Rosenberg, who runs the TV show, at WonderCon and she said, ‘Really?’ But wait for the official announcement, because this is not it.”
The new comic would be a sequel to “Alias”, however, and not a tie-in to the Netflix TV show. While the news of Jessica Jones returning to comics is super exciting, I can’t help but wonder what it would look like to have a new creative team working on the sequel–or even a brand-new, unrelated Jessica Jones comic. It seems like the biggest reason we haven’t had a sequel up until this point is creator availability–understandable, of course–but I’m torn over why Jessica Jones has to stay in comics limbo in the meantime. Either way, though, I’m excited she’s finally coming back.
