Black Uber driver furious after Walmart staff searched her car without consent, then refused to release her order: ‘You put your hands on me’
Picking up a delivery order should be simple. A driver arrives, gets the order, and leaves. But one Black Uber driver says a Walmart pickup turned into questions about why employees were checking her car.
A vehicle check may be understandable in some situations. But the driver questioned why she seemed to be getting extra scrutiny while another driver apparently was not.
Mrs.VickkieLee (@imakeeverythingaboutrace) shared the confrontation on TikTok after arriving at a Walmart in Morris, Illinois. She claims employees inspected her vehicle before refusing to give her three Uber orders. “Y’all have opened down my doors and inspected my car,” she said.
She wanted to know why
In the video, Mrs.VickkieLee repeatedly questioned why employees had inspected her vehicle. She also pointed to another driver nearby who did not appear to be receiving the same treatment. “Then why aren’t you doing it to his car?” she asked.
The confrontation was already heated by the time she started recording. Mrs.VickkieLee accused one employee of racism and using “white privilege.” At one point, she repeatedly told the employee, “You put your hands on me.”
In another video, Mrs.VickkieLee explained what allegedly happened before the confrontation was recorded. She said she arrived at Walmart to pick up three Uber orders and gave an employee the required code. Her car doors were already open, and she initially did not object to the inspection.
However, she claims the employee then put her head inside the vehicle and started looking around. Mrs.VickkieLee asked whether employees were required to search drivers’ cars. According to her, the employee said it was store policy and added, “I’ve been working for two years and I’ve never seen you before.”
Mrs.VickkieLee said she had driven for Uber for three years and had never had her car searched. She claims the employee then told her, “Since you want to be argumentative, I’m just not gonna give you the order,” before taking the orders back.
She said she tried to take the delivery bags from the cart herself, and that was when the confrontation allegedly became physical. “I tried to take the bags out the cart and that’s when she started pushing me,” Mrs.VickkieLee recalled. “We scuffled for a little bit before I started recording.”
Mrs.VickkieLee also addressed the policy behind the inspection. “The Walmart associate said it was in their policy to inspect our vehicles before they give us an order,” she wrote. However, she claims Uber told her “they don’t have a policy or a contract with Walmart stating that.”
She added that “Walmart corporate has yet to follow up.” Meanwhile, Uber investigated the incident and restored her account.
In a later video, Mrs.VickkieLee said she had been booked by Morris police and subsequently released. She then visited another Walmart in Joliet, Illinois, where an employee confirmed her car had enough space for three Uber orders. She also wanted to see Walmart’s inspection policy in writing. In a further update, she said she had a September 14 court date over battery and disorderly conduct allegations, but the prosecutor declined to file charges.
Viewers were divided over the inspection. One person identifying themselves as a former Walmart employee wrote, “We have no right to search anyone’s car. We just scan, drop the groceries and let the person know they are set to go.”
Others argued that employees can check vehicles under certain circumstances. “If your car is visibly dirty / smell bad they can refuse giving the order due to food safety,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “Only if the car was dirty, smelled bad or a child with no other adult we can deny,” before saying, “We can’t be digging in their car.”
Questions over how Walmart employees handle people around their vehicles have surfaced elsewhere. One shopper claimed she was ordered to leave while eating inside her car before going inside to shop. For Mrs.VickkieLee, the question remained why her vehicle was inspected this way while another driver nearby apparently was not.
