The Rumored Multiplayer Modes for Bioshock Infinite Have Definitely Been Cancelled

Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine has confirmed that Bioshock Infinite will definitely not feature a multiplayer component in a pair of tweets today. The announcement comes months after a report from Kotaku suggested that many of the game’s rumored multiplayer modes had been cut in an attempt to focus the development of the single-player campaign.

Bioshock Infinite‘s multiplayer features were a bit of an open secret: Technically, no one from developer Irrational Games or publisher 2K Games officially confirmed that the game would feature multiplayer, though Levine had suggested that multiplayer would be a possibility, and a job listing for networking expert suggested that they were, in fact, looking to add some kind of multiplayer to the mix.

In Kotaku’s report suggesting that multiplayer had gotten the axe, they suggested that there were two modes had been in the works over the course of the game’s development: A tower defense-style game where players had to fight waves of enemies and a series of stand-alone co-op missions referred to as “spec-ops”, named after the co-op offering of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series.

Interestingly, fans’ response to the news has been surprisingly positive. On NeoGAF, some of the knee-jerk reactions were; “awesome” and “thank god.” Normally, fans are vexed when they hear that anything potentially fun has been cut from a game, but with a series like Bioshock, which is known as a single-player experience, fans are taking the lack of multiplayer as a sign that the developer knows what their fans want.

Bioshock Infinite is still scheduled to hit stores on February 26th, 2013.
