A Pennsylvania school bus driver collapsed behind the wheel forcing two students to make a split-second decision that prevented a total disaster

Quick thinking.

Two Pennsylvania high school students recently prevented a potential disaster by jumping into action when their bus driver suffered a sudden medical emergency. The incident occurred on September 18, and it highlights how crucial it is for young people to remain observant and prepared during their daily commutes. Surveillance video released by Hollidaysburg Area School District shows the moment the bus began to drift forward while students were disembarking.

Alexis Smith, a sophomore, was one of the students who stepped up. According to ABC 7 Chicago, Smith said she was initially occupied with her phone until a friend pushed her from her seat and alerted her to the driver’s condition. “I immediately jumped into action and helped the bus driver as much as I could,” Smith said. As she rushed to the front of the bus, she realized the driver had become unresponsive and his head had dropped.

The bus had started rolling forward, which forced Smith to act instantly. She managed to hit the foot brake, though the bus did end up hitting a metal pole during the process. While Smith worked to keep the vehicle stationary, Skyla Horton moved to pull the parking brake and opened the bus doors to ensure better airflow for the incapacitated driver. Both students understood the gravity of the moment and worked in tandem to secure the vehicle.

Other students on the bus also played vital roles in the response

According to WTAJ, Jenna Anderson took the initiative to call 911 to report the medical emergency, while Travis Zerby used the bus radio to request urgent assistance. Managing the bus controls while simultaneously relaying information over the radio proved to be a significant challenge for the students.

The Hollidaysburg Area School District later shared a statement in a Facebook post to commend the students for their bravery. The district specifically noted that Alexis Smith took immediate action by safely bringing the school bus to a stop, using the radio to call for help, and assessing the driver’s pulse and respiration.

They also credited the GACTC Health and Medical Science instructors for providing the hands-on training that prepared Smith to respond so calmly. The district expressed deep gratitude for her quick thinking and courage throughout the ordeal.

Superintendent Curtis Whitesel highlighted the importance of the students’ response. He noted that the district is incredibly proud of the quick actions taken by the students to help avoid what could have been a serious accident. He mentioned that the resilience of the youth was on full display as they saved the day. The driver, whose identity remains private, has since received medical clearance to drive and has returned to his regular route.

Smith said that she would likely have struggled if she had been alone

She said that the coordinated effort of the group made all the difference. When reflecting on the experience, Smith shared that her regular driver now jokes and calls her ‘our hero’ whenever she boards the bus.

The surveillance video serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine ride home can change. It captures the realization setting in among the students as they move from confusion to decisive action. The calm demeanor maintained by the students during the emergency is a testament to their character and the effectiveness of their school training. By staying focused and working as a team, these students ensured that everyone on board remained safe.

The incident also highlights the complexity of operating a school bus, especially during a crisis. Smith noted that the challenges of communicating over the radio while trying to hold the brake pedal were substantial. Despite the difficulties, the students remained composed and followed the necessary steps to prevent a collision. Their ability to handle such a high-stress environment was impressive.

This story is a powerful example of the impact of preparation and teamwork

The students involved in this incident proved that being aware of one’s surroundings and knowing how to respond to an emergency can save lives. It is heartwarming to see that the driver has recovered and is back to his duties, knowing that he has such capable and brave students on his route.

The community in Hollidaysburg has every reason to celebrate the heroism shown by these young individuals on that Thursday in September. Their actions on the bus will surely be remembered as a shining example of student leadership and quick thinking for a long time to come.
