‘A Mummy remake with an actually Egyptian cast???’: Lee Cronin’s remake casts May Calamawy and May Elghety

The Mummy is one of Universal’s biggest monster movies. And now that Lee Cronin, known for Evil Dead Rise, is taking his own spin on the franchise, fans are interested in his take on it. New casting though has many locked in.
Three new cast members were announced as joining the Cronin remake. Among them were May Calamawy and May Elghety. Veronica Falcón also was announced as joining the cast along with previously announced Jack Reynor and Laia Costa. But fans perked up at the idea of Calamawy and Elghety as part of the cast. Both actors are Egyptian.
The 1999 film is considered a classic but many have pushed back at the film’s somewhat racist storyline. It is a “white savior” story without an Egyptian cast and many consider it a misrepresentation of Egyptian culture. While we don’t know what Cronin has planned for his take on the story, fans online are excited about the casting of Egyptian actors.
“Finally, they noticed that they could hire Egyptians to present Egyptian culture,” one user wrote on X. Another wrote “May Calamawy is Egyptian-Palestinian and May Elghety is Egyptian, Lee Cronin I was not familiar with your game. A Mummy remake with an actually Egyptian cast??? Thank GOD.”
Many were happy to see Calamawy employed. She made her mark in the Disney+ series Moon Knight and then was supposed to be in Gladiator II prior to her scenes being cut. Fans have been waiting to see her shine again and getting cast in The Mummy is a huge next step! Elghety has been working in Egyptian film and television.
We were already excited about Cronin’s take on The Mummy and now the new casting just adds to that excitement! Hopefully this continues to find work for both Calamaway and Elghety because in the words of the youth, LET’S GO!!!!
