Man Walks Up to Walmart Employee Looking for Sore Throat Medicine. Then Gets Confused When He Realizes He Has to Pay to Get It: ‘It’s Your Fault’

The employee was also confused.

Working in the customer service industry is not easy, especially when you find yourself encountering unpredictable people. @skylouieeeee, a Walmart employee, shared an experience he had with a customer looking for medicine, only to be left seemingly baffled when the customer wanted to get it for free.

“As a person who’s going to a store to shop, why the hell would you come up to a store and try to get something when you know you got no g****** money?” skylouieeeee asked in his TikTok video, which had gained over 1.4 million views. He claimed that a customer had approached him asking where the medicines were, then later asked how much the medicine for sore throats cost.

“He said he was looking for some sore throat medicine, and I told him, ‘That’s gonna be only $6.99,’” skylouieeeee said. “Then the guy was like, ‘I mean, you can hear it in my voice a bit that my voice is not really doing good and my throat is messed up. Are you sure you can’t do nothing about it?’”

Walmart customer doesn’t understand why he had to pay

skylouieeeee said he told the customer that he couldn’t do anything to help with his sore throat and reiterated that he had to pay $6.99 to get the medicine. However, it seemed that skylouieeeee’s response only confused the customer.

“He looked at me with a confused face and was like, ‘Why are you making a sick person pay for medicine? Like you can see that I’m sick and you can hear it in my voice,’” skylouieeeee recalled. The Walmart employee allegedly tried to be understanding with the customer’s situation, but ultimately told him that he couldn’t hand out the medicine for free just because he was sick.

skylouieeeee’s response supposedly made the customer angry. According to skylouieeeee, the customer yelled, “But if I wasn’t sick, I wouldn’t even worry about paying for it. But now when I’m sick, and I actually need it, ya’ll making me pay for it when it’s urgent.”

The customer’s statement seemingly left the Walmart employee confused, but skylouieeeee still tried to reason with the customer. “I’m like, ‘Sir, like I said, I understand your situation. But that doesn’t mean that you can get the medicine for free,’” he said.

Giving away items violates the Code of Conduct

skylouieeeee said the interaction eventually ended there. But when the customer left, he claimed the man had some parting words for him. “If my throat gets worse and I get even more sick, it’s your fault for not giving me the medicine,” the customer said, according to skylouieeeee.

TikTok users were also left confused by the customer’s line of thinking and shared their own versions to depict the seeming absurdity of the entire situation. “McDonald’s is really gonna make me pay for my food when i’m HUNGRY? cmon bro,” one commenter said.

Some felt like Walmart was a place you could experience new things. “Walmart is literally the land of all possibilities,” a commenter said. While some argued that skylouieeeee did the right thing, as giving the medicine for free or paying for it himself could land him in trouble with the company. “I tell them we can get fired for paying for customers,” a commenter wrote.

Giving away items for free could lead to an employee getting fired, as it breaches Walmart’s Code of Conduct on making ethical decisions. However, it remains unclear whether the company can fire an employee for personally paying for someone’s items, as it is not explicitly stated, nor are there any rules against it in its Code of Conduct, unless the company views it as a form of engaging in bribery.
