Woman Visits the Gynecologist for a Check-up, Then Sees a CCTV Camera Right Outside the Door: ‘I’m Hoping the Camera Was Off..?’

Undergoing a gynecologist exam is a rather intimate experience that many women hesitate over, and given the nature of the practice, utmost privacy is expected from patients. A TikToker believed she was going to have a relatively normal health check-up during her visit to a gynecologist clinic, only to discover that her session might not be as private as she initially thought.
Content creator @mnicole855 shared a video on her TikTok that has since garnered over 1.2 million views. In the video, she claimed to have visited the gynecologist for a general wellness check, but purportedly realized that a CCTV camera was installed right outside the door of her consultation room only after her appointment was finished.
While a CCTV camera situated near a door isn’t a cause for concern in normal instances, what seemed to alarm mnicole855 was that her gynecologist clinic allegedly had glass panels installed right above the doors of consultation rooms. “I’m hoping the camera was off..?” mnicole855 said in her caption.
This could be a potential HIPAA violation
mnicole855 didn’t add any further context on whether the CCTV camera was actively recording. It remains unknown if it could actually see through the glass panels and into the room, but a possible invasion of privacy and HIPAA violation ignited heated responses.
“Wow!!! Lawsuit!!! Hippa violation,” one commenter claimed. “Why is there even a window there!?!?” Other TikTok users even suggested that the content creator should take down the video, send a formal complaint, and arm herself with a lawyer for a potential lawsuit. One user claimed to have similar CCTV cameras at their place of work, alleging that such cameras can be adjusted remotely to point in any direction.
X account @WallStreetApes re-shared mnicole855’s video on the platform, and claimed that the clinic was located in Arizona. The user also paused and zoomed in on the CCTV camera and alleged that the camera was “pointed directly facing the hallway” that patients pass through to get into the room. “So, it’s very likely that this camera could actually see into the room,” the user claimed.
This isn’t the first time concerns for HIPAA violations in a gynecologist setting were raised. As per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) serves to safeguard patients’ sensitive health details without their consent. As such, it is a medical provider’s moral and ethical obligation protected by the legal system. Recording a patient, be it on a CCTV camera or not, without their explicit consent is liable under federal law.
