LA Woman Tried Breaking Up With her Hinge Date. Then the Coffee Shop Turned Into a Sitcom: ‘It’s Not You, It’s Me.’
Her awkward Hinge breakup became entertainment for a bunch of coffee shop patrons.
Some partners just aren’t meant to be, and instead of ghosting, the best thing to do is to break things off. Katie Leszynski (@katieleszynski) from Los Angeles tried to break up with her Hinge date in a coffee shop. But what was supposed to be a civil conversation quickly turned into a sitcom with other customers watching on as the live audience.
“Sometimes, two puzzle pieces are just meant to be with other puzzle pieces,” Leszynski told TikTok. She had a pleasant experience with her Hinge match. But, after eight dates, she realized they weren’t compatible. She consulted her mother over the phone, who advised her to tell him face-to-face that she was no longer interested.
Leszynski messaged him, and she booked a cafe near his house. He was sick, but she proceeded with her plan and arrived early.
Entering the worst coffee shop for a serious conversation
“I immediately realized that this wasn’t the vibe I was looking for,” she said. Leszynski said that the location was filled with at least 20 elderly people, some Armenian men, playing chess and smoking cigars. It didn’t seem like a place where couples could break up in relative privacy.
Leszynski almost left, but her man from Hinge told her that he was already two minutes away. With no other shop open on the block, Leszynski made peace with her fate, bought chamomile tea, shimmied through the crowded coffee shop, and found a seat.
“The minute he walks in, I can tell that all of these men have clocked that I’m sitting here, he’s standing there, and this is either going to be a romantic coffee date, or it’s not going to go so well.” She said even the barista stopped, apparently intrigued at what would happen next. The man brought her favorite mug with him, which Leszynski thought was kind. She thanked him for bringing it, and his response took her aback.
The breakup became an impromptu sitcom
“Well, you’re breaking up with me,” the man said. Leszynski clarified that, technically speaking, it wasn’t a breakup because they weren’t officially together. But she eventually agreed and said that they should stop dating. The man asked her why, and she gave out a classic response.
“It’s not you, it’s me,” Leszynski said. But the moment she dropped the line, she claimed that the coffee shop turned silent. She observed the room and said she saw a man whose mouth was agape. Nevertheless, she continued to explain to her date that she wasn’t ready for a relationship, apologizing for leading him on.
“Okay, do you have notes for me?” The man asked. Leszynski insisted that there was nothing wrong with him, calling him “lovely.” She thought that would be the end of it, but the man had more to say.
“Well, I have some notes for you,” he said. Leszynski said she heard the barista drop what she was doing to listen in. The man continued, “I wouldn’t get a Valentine’s Day gift for somebody if you’re going to break up with them.”
Leszynski explained that Valentine’s Day was their third date. He got her flowers, and she got him a journal. She thought she was merely doing something nice for him and didn’t see it as more than an exchange of gifts.
“I won’t do that again,” she told her ex-Hinge date. It appeared to be a misunderstanding of intentions, but at least she didn’t make him pay for a $120 nail appointment. But, unexpectedly, the man started getting emotional.
The cherry on top
She offered to take him outside to get him away from the prying eyes, and he agreed. They entered her car and he tried giving her a goodbye kiss. But Leszynski was firm, and they parted ways after that. But just as she was getting out of the parking lot, she noticed that some of the men from the coffee shop were following her.
They started walking towards her, and one of them was even waving. Then, a man knocked on her window. She rolled it down, awkwardly greeting the stranger.
“You forgot your mug,” the man said. It seemed like a small gesture of kindness, but just as she was about to roll her window up, the man made an unexpected pass at her. “So, I guess you’re single now?” he asked, making his comment the cherry on top of that chaotic coffee shop breakup. Leszynski didn’t pay the man any mind and drove off. While Leszynski’s date didn’t end well, this woman’s Hinge story turned out like a feel-good Hallmark movie.
