‘Total Crash Out’: A Journalist Tells Elon Musk That Many People ‘Loathe’ Him, So He Tells Her How Bad She is Instead
An eye for an eye.

A video is currently circulating on social media showing Tesla CEO Elon Musk reacting to being told how unpopular he is with certain parts of the public.
On July 23, 2026, The Economist released parts of their interview with Elon Musk online and in full on their page, and one segment that has gained a lot of attention sees Musk appear to take offense after the interviewer mentions how “loathed” he is.
At first, he tries to dismiss it, saying he doesn’t care, but as he continues speaking, he claims that the media is more “loathed” than he is. Many viewers in the comments section think that, contrary to his portrayal, Musk was significantly affected by the comment and was trying to retaliate against the reporter.

During the interview, The Economist’s editor-in-chief, Zanny Minton Beddoes, mentioned that some people despise him. Musk tried to appear indifferent, mentioning that he didn’t care at least twice. However, shortly after, he attempted to shift the narrative by telling Beddoes that media figures like her are even more despised by the public than he is, citing his quarter-billion social media followers as proof.
Speaking of Elon Musk, here’s his child’s mother spilling some dark secrets about Grok.
Here are Musk’s words verbatim: “Maybe some people do loathe me, and that’s probably true. I don’t care. But the fact that, as you pointed out, a quarter billion people follow me is that a lot more people actually like me than don’t. And, I think a lot more people hate you and the media more than you realize. Do you realize the media is despised?”
Musk repeatedly stressed that the public’s dislike for the media was far more than their dislike for him. At one point, Beddoes partially agreed and said that there is “certainly” a “loss of trust” in journalism due to past mistakes by media professionals. However, she added that the current distrust is largely fueled by the “polarizing” ideas surrounding it, promoted by platforms such as X.

Responding to Beddoes’s comments, Musk argued that the media itself is the problem and maintained that his platform does not promote any agenda related to journalists.
