The Never-Before-Seen ‘Star Wars’ Cartoon From the Creators of ‘Robot Chicken’ Is Finally Debuting

For those who remember that decade between Revenge of the Sith and The Force Awakens, when George Lucas started exploring putting Star Wars on the small screen, there might be a memory of an animated Star Wars show from the team behind Robot Chicken. It was the only project during that time that really got off the ground, with a few dozen episodes created.

However, after Disney bought Lucasfilm, it decided that the goofy nature of the cartoon (which was essentially The Simpsons but make it Star Wars) didn’t fit its idea of the brand, especially since a new trilogy was in the works. So the show was shelved. There it’s sat for around a decade, but during the panel spotlight at San Diego Comic Con for the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Seth Green shared some amazing news.

Star Wars: Detours will finally see the light of day as it will be screened at the museum.

What Is ‘Star Wars: Detours’?

Star Wars: Detours was originally announced in 2012, and Lucas himself was part of the project. The show was co-created by Matthew Senreich and Seth Green, the creators of Robot Chicken.

The cartoon was set between the events of the original and prequel trilogies and was a parody poking fun at the Star Wars universe. The team completed 39 episodes, but very little footage of it has ever been seen.

At the Star Wars Celebration in 2012, a bit footage debuted. Additionally, in 2020, a single six-minute episode was very briefly leaked. The episode was “Dog Day Afternoon” and featured two bounty hunters, 4-LOM and Zuckuss, trying to rob Dexter’s Diner. Jabba the Hutt, Boba Fett, and Lando Calrissian also made appearances in the episode.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

Since selling Lucasfilm, Lucas has been hard at work building the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Opening in Los Angeles on September 22, 2026, the museum will feature Star Wars in Motion, along with around 30 other exhibitions.

During the panel at San Diego Comic Con, audiences learned that the museum will have a 100,000-square-foot exhibition space, two theaters playing movies and shorts non-stop, and 33-plus galleries. The Slavko Vorkapick Theater will focus on the “motion of emotion,” showing a wide range of film from early silents to Looney Tunes shorts to student films by Lucas. The Robert Flaherty Theater will show only documentaries.

As for Star Wars: Detours, according to reporting from Gizmodo, Green shared, “There’s going to be a curation of episodes of that show on display for the public at the museum.”

Just how many episodes fans can see remains to be seen, but the fact that the show is finally debuting is truly exciting news.
