Woman Tries the New Patriotic Donut at Dunkin’ at 6AM. One Bite and She Has a Warning for Everyone: ‘Melted Crayons’

Dunkin has spent decades building its reputation around a simple promise of coffee, donuts and quick breakfasts that customers can pick up on the go. While the chain has expanded its menu with refreshers, sandwiches and seasonal drinks over the years, its limited-time donuts remain one of the products that attracts the most attention whenever a new flavour appears.

New seasonal donuts often draw early reactions from customers, particularly on TikTok where people frequently post first impressions after trying newly released menu items. Those videos can quickly become a place for viewers to share their own experiences and opinions about the latest offerings.

A recent TikTok video posted by Brenna Lehrke @brennalehrke brought those opinions back into focus. While the creator set out to review Dunkin’s new patriotic-themed donut, the comments quickly shifted toward the chain’s seasonal menu.

People had a lot more to say than expected

TikTok creator Brenna Lehrke visited Dunkin early in the morning to try the chain’s new patriotic-themed donut. The video begins with the line, “I need my Dunkin’ Donuts. I’m about to place my order…” before she shows the seasonal donut to the camera.

After taking her first bite, she said the donut tasted like “melted crayons.” The comparison quickly caught on in the comments, where many viewers shared their own opinions about the new release.

One commenter wrote, “I think Dunkin needs to reel it in a bit with all the different flavor combos and focus more on making actual good flavor combos.” Another questioned one of the chain’s earlier releases, saying, “Because what is a FRUIT PUNCH DONUT?” Others connected the new donut to previous products they said had disappointed them.

One viewer wrote, “When they came out with the banana stuff, we wanted a banana bread donut not a fucking fruit punch red 40 donut.” Another added, “Also the Fruit punch one. Someone should have gotten fired for that.”

Several comments also criticised other recent menu items, including the Pink Pineapple Refresher and Strawberry Cold Foam, suggesting frustration extended beyond the latest donut. Similar discussions have surfaced before, including a Wake-Up Wrap that sparked questions about its plant-based bacon, highlighting how other menu items have also prompted unexpected reactions from customers.

One person replied, “It looks like melted crayons too wtf???” Another wrote, “ALL their donuts taste like crayons theyre horrible.” A different commenter offered an even broader criticism, saying, “Everything at Dunkin tastes like chemicals.”

Some customers still wanted to try it anyway. Despite the criticism, the reaction was not entirely negative. That kind of split reaction has become common whenever Dunkin introduces seasonal products, including its Kylie Jenner menu, where TikTok food creator Natalie Ludwig reviewed every drink and called one combination “so weird.”

Some viewers admitted the review had actually made them more curious. One commenter wrote, “Ok im lowkey a freak and i need to try it.”  Another simply added, “Ok i might try it.” At least one person disagreed with much of the criticism altogether, writing, “I actually got it today and loved it.”

Others used the discussion to ask for discontinued favourites to return instead of more experimental flavours. One person wrote, “They need a tiramisu donut !!!” Another said, “I NEEEEEEEEEEEED them to keep the brownie batter valentines donuts as a 24/7/365 donut. Absolutely the best donut I’ve ever had in my entire life. Could eat 20 in one sitting.”

A nostalgic comment attracted attention as well. “I miss the donuts from the early 90s when they actually cared about the donut portion of their business. They’re trying way too hard to be Starbucks now and alienating their customer base in the process.” A few comments also claimed to come from Dunkin employees, although those claims could not be independently verified. One user wrote, “As a Dunkin worker the new donuts and pink pineapple refresher is just nasty asf .”
