Florida Woman Didn’t Take Her Rings Off For Ten Years. She Was Keeping Two People Together Even in Death.
Love that lasts a lifetime can carry an unspeakable weight of sorrow. When it reaches its inevitable end, the one left in love is filled with grief. Brooke (@nolablest2020), from Florida, told social media why she hasn’t taken her two important rings off from her fingers for ten years. What seemed to be a simple accessory choice apparently meant more than what meets the eye.
“I haven’t taken these rings off in ten years, and everybody always looks at them and thinks that I’m married,” Brooke told TikTok. People aren’t entirely wrong—they’re wedding rings, but just not Brooke’s. They belong to her grandparents.
“My grandmother passed away first, and she gave me her wedding band and her diamond engagement ring,” Brooke told TikTok. During her grandmother’s funeral, she recalled holding hands with her grandfather while wearing her grandmother’s ring on.
“Wow, how special that these rings can still be together even though she’s not here,” Brooke said. She said she felt chills just from recalling the experience. While some people seem to begrudgingly wear their wedding rings, Brooke’s grandfather was still wearing his even after his wife had passed.
But her grandfather would get sick right after her grandmother passed away. Brooke visited her grandfather’s house with her family. Her father told her that if she wanted her grandfather’s ring, she needed to ask him. For some reason, Brooke seemed hesitant to bring it up, but her father encouraged her anyway.
Just before they left the home, Brooke finally mustered up the courage to tell her grandfather what had been weighing on her mind. She had an interesting idea to reunite the pair even in death.
A reunion through their wedding rings
“Hey, I know that I have her ring, but I was wondering if you would let me have yours so that you guys could be together in this life and the afterlife,” Brooke told her grandfather. She recalled tripping over her words and sobbing as she expressed the idea to the older man.
But she wasn’t the only one in tears. When she suggested the idea to her grandfather, Brooke said he also started crying. At this point, her grandfather had become so sick that he lost weight. He couldn’t wear his ring anymore because he had gotten thin.
The older man went to his jewelry box, got the ring, and placed it in Brooke’s hand.
“Take care of it,” her grandfather told her. It seemed like a symbolic defiance against death and a celebration of a long-lasting love.
But shortly after, her grandfather would pass away. Brooke believes that he died of a broken heart. A person could experience love and grief so intensely to the point that the muscles in their heart would weaken. The loss could put them under immense emotional distress, and the person might follow their partner to the grave not long after.
“Ten years later, here I am, still taking care of it,” Brooke said. If it’s any consolation, she still has her grandparents’ rings worn on her middle and ring finger. Like she’d promised, she was going to keep them together even in death. Some marriages end in scandal, with one man’s infidelity in Georgia even being broadcast on Facebook Live. But it seems that for Brooke’s grandparents, their story continues to live on the fingers of their granddaughter.
