Woman Walks Into TJ Maxx. 15 Mins Later There’s a Tornado Warning, and an Employee Pitching Her a Credit Card: ‘The audacity to look at me’
TJ Maxx has become a popular destination for shoppers looking for brand-name products at discounted prices. From clothing and home décor to beauty items and kitchenware, many customers stop by hoping to find an unexpected deal. Some stores have even become known for offering the best TJ Maxx deals.
Like many major retailers, TJ Maxx occasionally becomes the backdrop for viral shopping stories. One recent incident even involved a shopper who believed TJ Maxx was selling a garbage purse.
A recent TikTok video shared by @unsolicitedsarcasm shows how an ordinary trip to TJ Maxx took an unexpected turn for one shopper. She says she went in for a routine return, but something happened inside the store that quickly became the focus of the story. The video has since drawn thousands of reactions online.
It was the timing that surprised her the most
She explained that she had visited TJ Maxx to return an item. Like many regular customers, she said she did not head straight to the returns counter. Instead, she put her return in a shopping cart and wandered around the store for a few minutes.
“I survived a TJ Maxx return is what happened,” she begins. She explained that she had already picked up several items while browsing when the atmosphere suddenly changed.
She says emergency sirens suddenly sounded throughout the store as every customer’s cellphone received a tornado warning. The store then announced a shelter-in-place for about 30 minutes.
The creator said she immediately went into panic mode, even though many other shoppers appeared to continue browsing as if nothing unusual had happened. “I call my husband. I’m like, this is it. Dying in a TJ Maxx. Very on brand, but not really what I thought would be happening to me at the end of my life.”
She said she called her husband on FaceTime because she had never experienced a tornado before. She then headed to the fitting rooms for shelter as the storm intensified.
She says strong winds pushed against the building as rain blew through the entrance. She recalled seeing the store manager holding the front door shut.
The creator said a fitting room employee greeted her and handed her a fitting room number. Moments later, the employee asked a familiar retail question.
“Do you have the TJ Maxx credit card?” The creator could hardly believe the timing. “Ma’am, I just called my husband to say goodbye, and I love him because there is a tornado watch in the area. We are in a shelter in place. The whole store could be sucked up in a tornado right now, and you’re trying to sell me a credit card?”
She finished the story with a joke that became one of the video’s biggest laughs. “Anyway, they have a great point system. So if you don’t have it, you should look into it.”
While many viewers found the moment funny, others sided with the employee. Former retail workers said credit card pitches are often required.
“Former retail worker. Rain, sleet, snow, tornado…they have to ask,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Former TJMaxx manager here, she deserves a REACH card for asking in the fitting room.”
Others joked that performance targets do not disappear during severe weather. “I mean, if the store ISNT obliterated she has a quota of sign ups to hit! lol,” one viewer commented.
Some suggested the employee may have been trying to stay calm by sticking to her normal routine. “Maybe she was terrified (I would be) and was just disassociating and just going thru the motions of a normal day,” another person wrote.
