The internet has a long history of falling in love with animals that look a little different. From Moo Deng the pygmy hippo to Grumpy Cat, online communities have repeatedly turned unexpected creatures into global celebrities. Now, that spotlight belongs to Jimothy, a Seattle raccoon whose unique appearance has made him one of the internet’s newest favorites.
After videos of the round, short-bodied raccoon began circulating online, people quickly learned that he may have short spine syndrome, a rare congenital condition that affects the development of an animal’s vertebrae. While his appearance initially surprised viewers, the internet’s reaction quickly shifted from curiosity to overwhelming adoration.

The Internet’s New Favorite Underdog
Fans celebrated his adventures, joked about his “lore,” and treated him less like an unlikely celebrity. One person summed up the general mood online, writing, “anyone who touches jimothy goes in the incinerator.”
While veterinarians believe he may have short spine syndrome, they also noted that his unusual appearance does not necessarily mean he is struggling. Videos show Jimothy moving around, exploring, and doing exactly what a raccoon does.
And for the internet, that was more than enough reason to start cheering him on.
Welcome to the Jimothy Cinematic Universe
Like many beloved internet celebrities before him, Jimothy has quickly developed his own online fandom. Within days, the viral raccoon became more than just a trending topic.
This fandom has even expanded into the gaming world. Artist and entrepreneur Chris Pirillo created a four-level browser game based around Jimothy’s adventures. The game turns the raccoon’s daily life into a retro-inspired experience. The NES-style game features Jimothy dodging traffic, raiding garbage cans, escaping paparazzi, and climbing ladders across different levels.
The Sims account joined in on the fun: “protect Jimothy at all costs.” Warner Bros. Games joked that “Jimothy has reached Gotham City,” giving the raccoon a superhero-worthy crossover moment. Dungeons & Dragons even got involved, posting, “A wild Jimothy appears!” as if the raccoon had wandered into a tabletop adventure.
Other gaming communities followed suit. Minecraft created a mock-up imagining Jimothy inside the game’s world. While fans of titles like Squirrel with a Gun created their own tributes.
TMZ shared “early-life lore” and baby videos of the raccoon. Jack in the Box posted a joke edit featuring the raccoon with the caption “jimothy = jibothy.” Uber Eats also joined with a joke about Jimothy waiting at the door for a delivery.
Government accounts also embraced the trend. The Washington State Department of Transportation joking that “Hot Jimothy Summer” was continuing. Reminding followers to stay cool and check travel conditions.
Fans, brands, and fandoms have all added their own pieces to the growing universe, and everyone is just happy to be along for the ride. So, here’s to Jimothy, the tiny Seattle raccoon who turned an unexpected condition into a worldwide moment of joy. May his adventures continue, his snacks remain plentiful, and his status as the internet’s favorite little guy live on.
