She Dressed Like a Bride in New York City to ‘Find’ a Husband. A Man Set her Up for a Therapy Appointment Instead: ‘He’s Older Than I’m Used To’
Why go on Hinge dates with strangers who’ll leave even before the food is served and spend thousands of dollars on therapy when the option to run around in wedding attire in the streets of New York City exists? Comedian Tess Tregellas (@tesstregellas) from New York City wore a wedding dress in hopes of finding a husband. She got a match, but not the type she expected.
“Happy wedding,” a man said upon seeing her in a white dress. She has a rose bouquet with her, and it looked as though she just walked out of a ceremony.
“Oh, I’m actually single,” she clarified. The man did a U-turn and seemed confused.
“Are you, like, a runaway bride?” he asked. Perhaps he’d assumed that Tregellas was having a Sex and the City Carrie Bradshaw moment. It may seem outrageous, but anything can happen in a wedding—from objections caused by illicit affairs to getting ghosted at the altar.
“No, I’m just trying to find my husband,” Tregellas stated. It’s definitely an unusual way to attract a man, but Tregellas is a comedian, and this all seems to be an act. Nevertheless, the man suggested that Tregellas come up with a dramatic backstory to go with her dress.
“You should tell people that you’re a runaway bride,” the man said. He further suggested that Tregellas should tell people that her husband left her at the altar because he had been cheating on her with her boss.
“I found out at work, and it was like a really hard day, and I said, ‘I quit.'” Tregellas played into the bit. It would make for an amusing play, on par with that stunt a man pulled by giving his co-worker a basket of YSL makeup instead of gifting it to his wife.
Did she get a date or a therapy session?
“Do you have anyone you could actually, in real life, set me up with?” Tregellas is looking for a date, after all. Perhaps asking the random man on the street for recommendations would be the easiest way to find someone.
“Oh, yeah… Like, a therapist!” The man said. At first glance, it seemed like the man just wanted Tregellas to get together with his friend who’s a therapist. It shouldn’t be controversial or unethical as long as she isn’t that man’s patient.
Tregellas said it was perfect because she wants a good listener. Then, she asked for the therapist’s name and photo. She needed a face for this mysterious figure, after all.
“A picture? I guess I can pull up his Zocdoc,” he said. It seemed like the man was determined to show Tregellas that she was being set up with a real therapist.
“He’s… older than I’m used to,” Tregellas said. But the man told her that his recommendation is “experienced”—as a date or as a doctor, it’s hard to say. She told the man that she’d message the doctor, but she was warned.
“He is bone-crushingly expensive and refuses to take insurance, but I hope you find solace,” the man said. Tregellas seems to have been set up, not for a date, but for a therapy appointment.
“I can’t tell if it’s a date or an appointment, but who cares?” Tregellas said in excitement. Even she was confused by the man’s suggestion. But if working her issues out is what leads her to finding the right one, then perhaps the man was correct to send her over to a therapist’s couch.
