California Barista Serves a Chatty Customer. The Woman Couldn’t Stop Complaining About Everything: ‘I Have Bad Vibes’
On top of perfectly memorizing every order, baristas in coffee shops often have to deal with absurd requests from customers. But Jordan (@bhadbharista), a barista from California, wasn’t just told to put too many pumps of caramel in one customer’s drink. She claims that she had to deal with one customer who just couldn’t stop complaining.
“This lady comes up, and right off the bat, I have bad vibes,” Jordan told TikTok. The woman, who she served in her cafe in the Bay Area, came in at 6 a.m. She made a request to have her coffee served in a mug.
Jordan didn’t think much of the request, and then the lady started asking what other establishments were open in the area. The barista told her that the nearby bagel shop is open, and so is the Starbucks. Out of the blue, the lady started asking what time Cheesecake Factory opens.
Jordan wasn’t sure, but she said it opened later. Nothing could have prepared her for the next question the lady apparently had.
“Can I take this mug and go to the bagel shop?” The lady explained that she wanted to stop by the bagel shop, eat the bagel, and then come back with the mug to the coffee shop because she needed to use their WiFi. It was convoluted, and at this point, Jordan was confused by the woman’s overexplanation.
“As long as you bring the cup back, I don’t care if you walk to the bagel spot,” Jordan said. Then for some reason, the lady noticed that the barista is named Jordan. She started asking Jordan if she was named after the country, which is apparently where she’s from. Jordan said no, and that should have been the end of it.
But the woman allegedly had so much more to say.
She wouldn’t stop talking to the barista
Normally, when a person is in line for coffee, they would cut the conversation short with their barista after paying for their order. But the lady allegedly went on a tangent and told Jordan that she needed to find a job as a morning person. She started asking Jordan what kind of jobs she can get as an early riser.
“I don’t know, like a coffee shop job?” Jordan said. The barista, exhausted by the woman, hoped that she wouldn’t ask if they were hiring.
“Yeah, it’s probably just a bunch of jobs nobody wants, because nobody wants to wake up early,” the woman replied. But Jordan said she brushed it off, telling the woman her total was $3.50. She kept talking about her sleep schedule and how she was an early riser, and by the time Jordan’s fellow barista called the lady’s name, she still hadn’t paid.
Jordan finally urged her to pay, and the lady thought about whether or not she should tip Jordan. Then, she started complaining about how she had no plans to tip. She resolved her indecision by tipping Jordan $0.90, which the barista didn’t care much for because she just wanted the lady out of her line. This purchase should’ve been a quick and easy transaction, but the woman apparently had so much to tell Jordan.
She complained throughout her cafe stay
But as the lady was walking down the line, she kept telling another barista who was preparing a drink that she wanted oatmilk in her drink. She kept repeating the request, but she didn’t need to—her drink was ready, and she told Jordan beforehand.
Because the lady didn’t do takeout, she supposedly stayed in the lobby and started talking another person’s ear off while having her coffee. Jordan started giving away free samples of their cafe’s turkey sandwich, and when the lady got a piece, she was upset that she didn’t get a sample that had turkey ham.
The woman’s complaints apparently didn’t end there. Jordan was starting to brief her team for the day. Then, the lady interrupted and said she wanted water. Jordan claims the woman kept repeating that she wanted water, even as Jordan was already pouring water in a cup.
Jordan said she was internally screaming, but she just smiled at the customer and handed the water. She placed a lid and handed a straw over to the customer. Even that became a point of grievance.
“I can’t take medicine with a straw,” she told Jordan. The lady finally walked out of the cafe, and Jordan needed a moment for herself to calm down.
“I hope I never see this woman ever again,” Jordan said.
