Her Hinge Date’s Mom Left a Message of Disapproval in Her Inbox. She Clapped Back: ‘My Mom Raised Me Just Fine’
Mama’s boys have a bad reputation in the dating scene. Having an overbearing parent can take its toll in relationships, especially romantic ones. Tova Sterling (@cheftova) matched with a man on Hinge. Then, she got an unexpected message from his mother.
Sterling is a chef from New York City who has cooked for several A-list celebrities, like Paul McCartney, among others. But she’s also famed for hosting the ‘Sinners’ Shabbat,’ a Friday night event featuring burlesque and drag performances. It’s essentially hedonism for dinner, with sushi being served on models’ bodies. As exciting as the concept may be, not everyone’s going to be thrilled about it.
Tova received a message from her date’s mother, which conveyed her disapproval of her.
“My son brought up dating you the last time he visited home, and when I looked at your profile, I was honestly appalled by the vulgarity of your content.” The mother continued by saying that although she couldn’t control who her son chooses to date, she told Sterling that her son wants to be a father one day. She doubts that Sterling could ever set a good example to children.
“I think your ability to be a good role model to children will be not just a deterrent for [redacted] but for any self-respecting man looking to one day have a family.” The woman clarified that she was just a concerned mother and that she wasn’t trying to judge Sterling.
A brutal response to her Hinge date’s mom
Most people wouldn’t want to be lectured by their dates, like this woman who got up and left after her date started acting like a know-it-all about her medical condition. But to be lectured by a date’s mother is on a whole other level.
“I could not be more thrilled to hear from you. Your son tried to have unprotected sex with me on our fifth date and ghosted me when I told him I don’t do that,” Sterling said. She essentially dropped a bomb on her Hinge date’s oblivious mother.
“I would like you to know that the reason I’m not surprise popping in to your family Thanksgiving with your unplanned grandchild is because my mom raised me just fine. Can’t really say the same for [redacted],” she added.
Can she be sued for defamation?
But the exchange didn’t end there. In a follow-up video, Sterling revealed that the mother didn’t believe her story. Moreover, the mother has accused Sterling of defaming her son for talking about the story online. She wasn’t happy about having the messages posted online, even though Sterling redacted both their names. Instead of letting the threats go, Sterling decided to drop yet another tidbit about her son.
“After I dated this guy, I went on a forum called ‘Are We Dating the Same Guy’ just to find out that he tried to stealth five other women,” Sterling alleged. She further implied that she was not afraid to face her date’s mother in court if push came to shove.
So, can the mother sue for defamation? According to the New York State Unified Court System, if she plans to sue for libel or slander, she has to prove that the story clearly identifies the subject of the false allegations. Nevertheless, she also can’t file defamation on behalf of her son. That’s something he’d have to do himself as an adult man, if he’s interested in doing so.
But for now, this all just seems to be yet another Hinge date gone wrong.
