New York Woman Says Her Date Spent 20 Minutes Telling Her How to Cure Her Incurable Kidney Disease. She Asked Him One Question: ‘Couldn’t Even Spell’

In most cases, people would put their best foot forward on a first date. Amanda Martinez from New York City had high hopes for somebody she went with on a date. But even before the food touched the table, their conversation spiraled into an argument over something unexpected.
“I should’ve listened to my gut feeling,” Martinez told TikTok. She regrets having gone on the date earlier in the day and decided to talk about the situation online. The date lasted 20–30 minutes, then Martinez cussed him out and left. But people don’t storm off for no reason.
“I showed up at the restaurant. Everything’s fine. He’s cool, he’s nice—he looks just like his photos, like, it’s all good,” Martinez said.
“We’re vibing, the waiter comes, and she takes our food order,” she continued. At the time, Martinez said she wanted to order pasta.
“Do you want to add a protein to your pasta?” the waitress asked. Looking back, Martinez felt appalled that the argument started all because of protein.
Martinez told the waiter she didn’t need protein because she’s a vegetarian. The only protein options available were meat and seafood, so she turned the waitress down.
“Apparently, this is homeboy’s trigger,” she recalled. The man started insisting that she get a protein. Martinez, on the other hand, tried politely declining the man’s push for protein. While this was happening, the waitress was standing there, confused if the couple would push through with ordering any protein items or not.
Insisting a carnivore diet on a vegetarian
After the waitress left, the man went on a lecture on how Martinez should’ve gotten protein with her pasta. When she told the man that she’s a vegetarian, his tone shifted.
“How people respond to me telling them that I’m a vegetarian is a major red flag. What I do with myself has nothing to do with you, and whatever you do with yourself has nothing to do with me. So, if you make it an issue, it’s going to be an issue,” Martinez said. Upon telling the man that she’s a vegetarian, he started questioning her. Martinez reenacted the scene with a condescending tone.
“How long have you been a vegetarian?” he asked, and Martinez believes he wasn’t thrilled with the idea. Nevertheless, she explained that she had been a vegetarian for over a decade. Martinez said at first, it was because she discovered factory farming by accident. Later on, she was diagnosed with a kidney disease.
“It’s in the best interest of my organs to keep me alive and healthy if I limit my protein intake, and specifically, animal protein,” Martinez replied. Instead of moving on and understanding her health and lifestyle preferences, the man started rambling on about the carnivore diet. He also began lecturing her on the importance of protein in the human diet.
Her date turned into an internet doctor
Taking it to the extremes, Martinez recalled that he also started talking about why the vegetarian diet is “bad” and why she should be following the carnivore diet instead.
“Did you miss the part that I said I had a kidney disease?” She raised it to him, but he didn’t think it was relevant.
“Yeah, what does that have to do with it?” He asked, and Martinez had to explain why eating animal protein is not beneficial to her health.
“The last time I checked, you’re not a nephrologist,” Martinez added by the end of her explanation.
“What’s that?” the man had no idea. But as Martinez herself told TikTok, a nephrologist is a kidney doctor. She attempted to get her point across by raising that the man was neither an expert on kidneys nor her personal doctor. But the man still wouldn’t budge.
Still, Martinez decided to stay cool. She entertained his questions about her disease, even though she felt like he was only probing her because he didn’t believe it. Martinez told him that she has Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and that it’s incurable. The best she could do was manage the disease by living a healthy lifestyle.
“If you followed a carnivore diet, I bet you, in six months, your disease would be cured,” the man insisted, disregarding Martinez’ explanation once more. When he told her this, Martinez lost it on him.
Walking away from a red flag
“I genuinely was so blown away by the audacity to speak on something you don’t know anything about,” she recalled on the ride home. In frustration, Martinez told the man to spell the name of her disease.
At first he was confused by the request. But if he were an expert, he would at least know what the disease is called and how it’s spelled.
“You have the audacity to sit up here and argue with me, go bar-for-bar, round-for-round, about what you think is best for me and my disease, and you, one, don’t even remember the… name of it, and two, couldn’t even spell it even if I said it out loud to you?” Needless to say, the date was not able to spell PKD.
Before the waiters could even serve the food, Martinez got the check and had her pasta to go. But that’s what first dates are for, and perhaps there’s consolation in that she decided to walk away instead of sitting in the trenches for one more hour.
