After Once Praising the Mayor, Trump Now Reshares a Video Demanding Zohran Mamdani Be Criminalized and Expelled From the Country
About-face.

Donald Trump just reshared a video on Truth Social that calls for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other democratic socialists to be criminalized and deported, marking a sharp turn from his past praise for the mayor.
The video, posted by conservative pundit Michael Savage on July 4, 2026, is a 49-minute rant that labels Mamdani and others as “hardcore communist b******s” who must be stopped before they destroy the country.
It’s a sharp turn, especially since Trump once had a friendly meeting with Mamdani at the White House after his mayoral win last year. Savage’s video meanwhile, doesn’t hold back. According to The Hill, he compares democratic socialists to Pol Pot, the Cambodian dictator responsible for the deaths of millions, and insists they’re turning the U.S. into a socialist nightmare. “Forget the smirks, forget the smiles, forget the bulls— that it’s like Denmark and Norway,” Savage says.
“These are hardcore communist b******s who must be stopped, criminalized and deported. I’m clear as a bell on this. We will fall if they are not deported.” He suggests sending them to Uganda, calling them “scum” to be kicked out before they spread their “cancer.” He adds, “I don’t give a s— what the Supreme Court says! I don’t give a f— what The New York Times says! Decriminalize the Democrat Socialist Party and deport them now, before you lose your freedom and your life.”
Trump’s decision to amplify this message is unexpected, given his history with Mamdani
Just last year, the two had a cordial meeting at the White House, with Trump even complimenting the newly elected mayor. Now, he’s platforming a pundit who wants Mamdani and others like Sen. Bernie Sanders deported. It’s not the first time Trump has gone all-in on the “socialism is communism” narrative.
He’s repeatedly warned that democratic socialists are more dangerous than both world wars and the September 11 attacks, calling their ideology a “cancer that had to be removed.” During a Fourth of July speech, he told a crowd on the National Mall, “You’ve got to cut it out, and you got to cut it out fast.”
This isn’t just rhetoric. Trump’s team is testing this strategy with focus groups as Republicans gear up for the November elections, which will decide control of Congress. The playbook isn’t new. According to The Independent, Republicans like Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan used similar tactics during the Cold War to paint Democrats as communist sympathizers. But Trump’s version is more aggressive, with a heavy dose of personal attacks and doomsday predictions.
On Truth Social, he’s been hammering the message home, writing on July 11, “AMERICA WILL NEVER BE A COMMUNIST COUNTRY!” He followed this with another post that said, “The Radical Left Lunatics, often referred to as Dumocrats, have lost control of their Party. They are being led by loud and unattractive people who have totally lost their way. Hopefully, they will fight back, and not let this sick, Communist ideology, take over America!”
The timing of this push is interesting
It comes when democratic socialist candidates have been winning primaries. In New York City alone, two candidates endorsed by Mamdani – Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier – won their Democratic primaries just last month. These wins have sparked debates within the Democratic Party, with some members welcoming the shift and others worrying it could hurt their chances in the fall.
A recent poll from The Economist and YouGov found that while 1 in 3 Americans would back a democratic socialist in an election, 45% said they wouldn’t. The same poll showed that 32% of respondents view socialism favorably, while 39% see it unfavorably.
Savage, the creator behind the video, has a history of inflammatory rhetoric. His real name is Michael Weiner, and he hosts Savage Nation on Newsmax. In 2009, he was permanently banned from entering the U.K. for “seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred.”
His latest rant is no exception, blending hyperbolic comparisons with calls for mass deportations. It’s the kind of content that thrives in the current political climate, where fearmongering about socialism and communism is a go-to strategy for energizing the base.
Just a while ago, he was willing to engage with democratic socialists like Mamdani, even if it was just for a photo op. Now, he’s fully embracing the idea that they’re an existential threat to the country. It’s a shift that reflects the broader Republican strategy of painting the left as radical and dangerous, a tactic that’s been effective in past elections. Whether it will work this time remains to be seen.
