Redditor Discovers App Has Paywalled the Mixes They Made – “I Understand Why People Are Going Back to Analog.”

Just Another Reason It Pays to Do Things the Analog Way Rather Than the Digital Way

As if it wasn’t bad enough that nearly every single app and service the public uses now requires a subscription, sometimes those subscription services paywall one’s own creations.

That’s what happened to one Redditor in the r/anticonsumption subreddit who decided to go back to using BetterSleep after a year away. Unfortunately, after they returned, they found that BetterSleep had paywalled previous mixes they had created in the app.

The poster’s response said it all: “I understand why people are going back to analog.”

Digital technology has its benefits, but it also has its downsides, such as being detrimental to one’s mental health. The negatives of a digital life have led to an increase in people, particularly younger ones, ditching technology whenever they can to revisit the analog days.

Whole movements have sprung up, such as the Neo-Luddites, dedicated to becoming less tech-obsessed and returning to a non-digital lifestyle. Although this movement advocates for turning away from social media, AI, and even smartphones, participants tend to be more anti-exploitation than anti-technology. They often view technology as a profit-driven dystopia, leading them to offline pursuits.

As the Reddit user who shared their BetterSleep experience said, “I hate how greedy these companies have become. I have cancelled so many subscriptions such as Spotify, Apple Music, etc because I value owning the stuff I pay for.”

Reddit Users Share the Ways They Get Offline

While the original poster on the Reddit thread explained that they “went back to buying books, and my cds like I used to do when I was a kid-teenager,” other Redditors shared their own analog escapes from technology.

One user wrote, “28 y/o here and I loooove physical media! Crossword puzzles in the paper, and I love my vinyl collection too.”

Another person shared, “I still use my physical books, word searches, crosswords, coloring books, etc. I love them and they travel in my bag with me anywhere.”

Those offline pursuits have significant benefits, too, according to science. Research has found that writing by hand activates more areas of the brain than typing does. Meanwhile, MRI scans have shown that reading a physical book encourages more imagination and empathy than reading text on a screen.

The analog life covers a variety of activities, though, so whether one is journaling with pen and paper, listening to a CD, or playing the board game Monopoly rather than Monopoly Go, detaching from digital life doesn’t have to be complicated. Best of all, by purchasing only physical media and products, consumers own that thing, no subscription required.
