Republicans are now demanding $1 billion for Trump ballroom funding

President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom, which was supposed to be privately funded, will now be paid for by taxpayers. Republican lawmakers now see the ballroom as a necessity for the “safety” of US presidents and initially proposed $400 million in taxpayer money to be used for its construction. But the budget has drastically ballooned since, as Republicans are now demanding $1 billion for the ballroom.
Lawmakers wrote in the document that additional funding is necessary for security upgrades. The Secret Service facilities “above-ground and below-ground” for the ballroom were also accounted for in the costing. Although the number is controversial, the document also indicated that the figure will be appropriated for general security adjustments and upgrades within the White House Compound.
The document made a disclaimer, though. It said, “None of the funds made available under this section may be used for non-security elements of the East Wing Modernization Project.” Essentially, the budget allocated for ballroom security should only be used for such. Decorations and other golden accents (that the president seems to have a taste for) will not be included.
It goes without saying, misappropriating funds in the government would be an unthinkable crime. Nevertheless, it’s no small amount, and taxpayers will be the ones footing the bill.
Taxpayers seething at the cost of the White House ballroom
“It’s not going to cost the taxpayers a dime,” Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said back in October 2025. She even joked with the members of the press, “Perhaps the president will even bring you all out to see it one day at the appropriate time.” With the amount the ballroom now demands, this room should be for public viewing—but it wouldn’t be. The whole justification behind the ballroom is to secure the president and prevent other instances of assassination.
Regardless, social media users haven’t forgotten the Trump administration’s promise to shoulder the cost of the ballroom. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand remarked, “Somehow not a “dime” turned into $1 billion…”
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office on X wrote, “WHY HAS THE BALLROOM COST GONE UP 5X ?? WHY IS THE BALLROOM NOW PUBLICLY FUNDED?”
Another social media user cited the expense as an example of “waste, fraud, and abuse” in the Trump administration. But for Republicans who’ve spoken up in favor of the ballroom, all seem to be convinced that it’s the only way to keep the president safe.
Congress still gets to vote on the proposal
During the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an armed shooter broke out. Cole Thomas Allen checked into the Washington Hilton Hotel prior to the event. Allen’s text messages spoke of his intent to target members of the Trump administration and, presumably, Trump himself.
A US Secret Service member did get shot during the incident, but no one else was harmed. Since then, the incident has been used by Republicans to advocate for the ballroom’s construction.
Some have speculated that the attack was merely a false flag meant to rally people behind the ballroom. One ex-MAGA influencer even alleged that the pro-ballroom tweets after the shooting were possibly paid, coordinated messages by the Trump administration. Regardless, the position of president of the United States is a public role, and Trump is not the only president to face multiple assassination attempts during his term.
A ballroom will not keep him safe. Now that Republicans are now asking taxpayers to pay up, it’s important to remember that Congress still gets to vote on whether or not public funds should be used for the project.
