Woman goes to self-checkout at Minnesota Aldi. Then she gets stopped by a worker: ‘I’ve neverrrr had my receipt CHECKED AT ALDI!’

Ringing up your items through self-checkout should be smooth sailing. All there is to do is scan the products, load them into your cart and pay. Pretty hassle-free. Instead, what should’ve been a simple transaction at Aldi transformed into a nightmare for one woman who was accused of stealing by not one but two employees.
What Went Down At The Minnesota Aldi?
While standing in self-checkout, Aldi customer Wendy Blount (@wendybblountt) filmed the middle of an interaction between her and a female employee.
“Only two things got scanned in this cart,” the female employee says, striding to the main cash register in the center of the area and the customer follows suit. “I just saw it. I can go print out your receipt if you’d like.”
However, it isn’t necessary. “I can show you this,” she says, unveiling her receipt for $109.86.
“Why didn’t you just show that a minute ago?” she asks aggressively, snatching the receipt. “Let me see the date. There were two items on the first receipt. So, I just asked for a second.”
Instantly, the customer’s blood boils. “So, you just accused me of stealing?” she retorts, angrily. “I came out of the bathroom and I’m just asking you for your other receipt and you only had two items on the other receipt. Frosted Flakes and something else,” the employee amends, handing the receipt to a male manager named Payton.
Not A Pleasant Aldi Manager Intervention
“You can just go, ma’am,” he says, returning the receipt to Blount. “She just accused me of stealing,” she argues.
But he jumps to his employee’s defense. “She was doing her job. Whenever it happens, we have to come check receipts,” he explains. “So, if you hand somebody a receipt in a cart full of stuff with two things, I’m gonna ask for another receipt as well.”
“So, you’re accusing me of stealing, too?” she presses. Before she can finish her question, what Payton does next fans the flames rather than extinguishes them. The content creator watches as he pushes her cart with her purse and full groceries out of the store and parks in the entrance.
“He’s taking my things out of the store with my purse. Y’all just accused me of sealing. I don’t even have Frosted Flakes in my basket,” she says. His reply only adds fuel to the fire. “Ma’am, I’m sorry. We’ve had a really long day. Can you please just leave?” As he walks away, Blount retorts, “Because you had a long day, it’s OK to accuse people of stealing?”
The Argument Escalates
Once Payton returns, the quarrel continues. “You removed my things without my permission out of the store,” she yells. “Did I do something wrong?”
“No, but you’re being rude. We asked you a question and I’m asking you to leave,” he says.
“Why did you touch my cart and remove it from the store?” she replies.
Then, the straw breaks the camel’s back. Payton strolls to the entrance and stands in front of the doors in an attempt to escort her out of the Aldi.
“I’m sorry for that misunderstanding,” he says, but is cut off by Blount.
“You’re not making it better! You’re very rude. You’re treating me as if I did something wrong!” she shouts, the manager’s form retreats further into the distance.
Viewers Were Livid
Blount’s clip amassed 7.3 million views, sparking outrage in many on her behalf.
“I pray your lawsuit is BOUNTIFUL,” one viewer commented.
“I’ve neverrrr had my receipt CHECKED AT ALDI! they don’t even have BAGS,” another stated.
“The fact that they are so rude…I want a refund. Immediately!!!!” a third remarked.
“This is terrible management. Terrible,” a fourth criticized.
Even alleged former and current Aldi employees entered the chat.
“NOPE. I WORKED AT ALDI AND THEY SPECIFICALLY TELL US NOT TO DO THIS BECAUSE THE CUSTOMER CAN SUE,” one commenter shared.
“As an Aldi employee we are not supposed to do this,” a second echoed.
Although Aldi is known not to do this, each location varies, and it does occur as it did for one Redditor in an r/aldi subreddit. A receipt check may happen if a customer gives a plausible reason, as one worker revealed.
“We at Aldi do check receipts if you give cause. We do stop you at the door if you trigger the EAS alarm and we will ask for your receipt the whole nine yards. A manager is also usually reviewing the camera footage – which in the case of my store can see your nose hairs – to see what’s going on,” they elaborated. “If nothing, have a nice day. If something ,we may simply tell you we have you on camera doing wrong and tell you to simply not come back.”
The Aldi Saga Continues
Blount posts a clip of the vacant Aldi, not a soul in sight.
“So, this video, I just so happened to have done this video to show how empty the store was. We’re in the process of going through a snow storm in Minnesota,” Blount explains in a voiceover. “I was up there, checking out by myself.”
Next, she unveils the $109.86 bank statement from Aldi, followed by another one from nine hours beforehand, disputing the double receipt argument.
“There was no other charges prior today since 10 o’clock this morning,” she says. Afterward, the screen shifts to expose Payton sliding into her Facebook messages to bury the hatchet through apologies.
“He went as far as to write to me on Facebook, trying to tell me to ‘squash it’ and trying to apologize,” the content creator shares. “I’m not a liar and I’m not a thief. I actually own a business. This was very embarrassing.”
“She kept saying something about a second receipt. All of that was made up. There was no other receipt,” Blount concludes.
What Is The Next Course Of Action?
Needless to say, Payton’s apology didn’t suffice. Blount intends to pursue litigation and is turning to social media users for help. “I’m currently seeking legal action regarding this situation. If you’re an attorney or know one, please reach out,” she reveals in her most updated post.
Can You Sue For False Accusations?
Indeed, you can, especially if it has damaged your reputation, according to Morgan & Morgan. This is a form of defamation, which falls under a civil suit. All evidence needs to be collected for a lawsuit, including recorded and written. Never contact or respond to the accuser since the words will be used against you in court.
@wendybblountt This lady walked up to me and aggressively said “ are you going to scan the rest of these items?!” I was so confused because I had my receipt with EVERY SINGLE ITEM in my cart…and I didn’t purchase Frosted Flakes at all!
