Chet Hanks Is an Internet Goldmine. And Yes, He’s Still Stuck in Colombia.

Sometimes, Chet Hanks really is the Internet gift that keeps on giving.
The actor, rapper, and son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson has once again made headlines, over the fact that he has been stuck in Colombia since late February. The snafu is because of an issue with Chet’s passport, due to an impromptu trip he took from Puerto Rico to Medellín, Colombia.
Hanks, who is a dual citizen of both the U.S. and Greece, decided to bring his Greek passport on the trip, instead of his U.S. one that was about to expire. As he put it in a video about the ordeal: “Sometimes they don’t let you in the country, even if [the passport] hasn’t expired, but it’s about to expire.”
The issue came when Hanks went to return home from Colombia, only to discover that his Greek passport would not allow him to enter the U.S. To Hanks’ surprise, he was informed that, in lieu of a valid U.S. passport, he would need a green card in order to enter the country. While Colombia’s U.S. Embassy can apparently help Hanks solve the problem, there is no telling at this point if he has visited them.
“I don’t have a green card because I’m an American citizen,” Hanks explained on social media. “I don’t have my American passport with me. So, I’m literally stuck in Colombia. I’m stuck in Medellín. Granted, there’s worse places to be stuck, but I literally have no … idea what I’m going to do.”
“The Saving Private Ryan Sequel We Deserve”
In the meantime, Hanks is clearly making the best of his predicament Over the weekend, he took to Instagram to share a photo dump from Colombia, set to Bad Bunny’s “NO ME QUIERO CASAR.” As the caption of his post puts it: “Getting out of Colombia: failure. Being stuck in Colombia: success. Te veo pronto ??✌?”
He also appears to be passing the time in Colombia by getting new veneers, appearing on the Instagram Stories of a local dentistry clinic in Medellín. As Hanks says in the posts: “I came to the conclusion that life is short, and I want to smile as much as possible. I’m really excited to get my new teeth.”
“It’s more complicated than just putting the veneers on your teeth,” Hanks tells the camera. “They got to shape them so they match perfectly with your jaw and your bite. That takes real skill, so I’m glad I came here.”
The Internet has definitely had fun reacting to Hanks’ predicament, wondering exactly what accent he might adopt once he eventually returns from Colombia, what this means for the next season of his Netflix series Running Point, and what this will mean on the existing geopolitical landscape. His dad Tom’s iconic career has also come up, between people calling the ordeal “The Saving Private Ryan sequel we deserve”, and questioning why strings haven’t already been pulled to get him back. Either way, knowing Chet Hanks, this situation is probably going to go in even wilder directions than we can imagine.
