We have a need for speed. Or a need for more Top Gun and director Joseph Kosinski teased the highly anticipated follow up to Top Gun: Maverick while at the Governors Awards, where Tom Cruise was honored with an Academy Award.

On the carpet for the ceremony, Variety spoke with F1: The Movie and Maverick director Joseph Kosinski about the sequel to the 2022 film. After the success of Maverick, news of a sequel soon followed up with the success of the cast, the movie was seemingly in limbo until now. Screenwriter Ehren Kruger is reportedly in the middle of writing a first draft.

“We’re working on a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski said at the Governors Awards. “That’s in the works and in the script stage right now.” When asked how close they are to having a script ready, Kosinski said “Well, that’s a question for Mr. Ehren Kruger who is currently at his laptop, writing it as we speak. So hopefully soon we’ll get our first pass at it and I’m very excited about that.”

Honestly? Good! I am glad they’re taking their time and making sure they get it right for a sequel. There is a lot riding on it as a continuation but also there is a lot that probably has to factor into it. Like how famous 90% of that cast is now. Back in 2022, fans knew a lot of our beloved Daggers but Maverick helped catapult stars like Glen Powell, Manny Jacinto, Greg Tarzan Davis, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, and more to mega fame.

While Maverick was about Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) returning to Top Gun and fixing his relationship with Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the sequel could be any number of things. Will I get more of my beloved Jake “Hangman” Seresin? What about Coyote and Yale? Fanboy deserves his time to shine! Phoenix and Bob better be there too!

Point is: There is a lot that Kruger, Kosinski, Cruise, and company all have to do to make this movie as successful (and fun) as Maverick and if that means we have to wait for it, so be it.
