Things We Saw Today: James Gunn on Where ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ Falls in the MCU Timeline

Is there anyone making more entertaining superhero content than James Gunn? Between The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn is consistently delivering the most enjoyable superhero stories out there. While Vol. 3 will be the final outing for the Guardians, the team will appear in this summer’s Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as December’s Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Gunn, who filmed the special simultaneously with GOTG Vol. 3, took to Twitter to discuss where the holiday special fits into the Marvel cinematic universe.

The Disney+ holiday special, inspired by the much maligned Star Wars Holiday Special, will see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff reprise their roles. Gunn tweeted that the special “comes between Love & Thunder and GOTGVol3, with new stories and characters connected to the Guardians universe.”

Gunn added that the holiday special would set up plot points for GOTG Vol. 3, including the introduction of a new character. Said character will likely be Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock, who was created by the Sovereign to destroy the Guardians.

The Guardians of the Galaxy: The Holiday Special premieres in December on Disney+, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which hits theaters in May 2023.
