Jürgen Otto has developed a fondness for the tiny Peacock Spider, a surprisingly cute jumping spider native to Australia. Like peacocks, the 4mm males put on an impressive display of their colorful bodies and perform a dance that some commenters have likened to ground crews guiding in airplanes. The evolutionary pressure on these little spiders seems impressive, as the video shows unsuccessful mating attempts ending in the female making a meal of her would-be suitor.
It’s a long video, with fascinating video footage of the diminutive dancer, but we’ve rigged it to skip ahead to 2:42 so you can see the arachnid get his groove on.
