Robert Pattinson, a man famed for his wizardry and vampirism, has reportedly been cleared by Warner Bros. to don the Dark Knight’s cowl in director Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie The Batman.
According to Deadline, Pattinson received the Batstamp of approval from studio Warner Bros. While the actor was Reeves’ rumored first choice, Warner Bros. still needed to sign off, and Pattinson won the role over fellow Brit Nicholas Hoult (Tolkien, The Favourite).
The latest Batflick is set to follow “Bruce Wayne in the formative stages of Batman,” so I assume we’ll see Bruce developing his gadgets, training hard, and making new friends and villains. Reeves in the past has also stated that the movie will feature “an almost-noir driven, detective version of Batman,” so hopefully there will be some fabulous fedoras in the mix.
I’m pretty neutral on Pattinson. No one should be judged by their performance in the Twilight Saga movies; that’s just not fair, and we all do misguided things in our youth. He’s certainly got a nice jawline for the suit, and a more sensitively broody Bruce wouldn’t be a bad way to go, if we’re going to go in that direction. A black-turtlenecked Bruce Wayne who writes poetry about his sadness, if you will. I’m into it.
If the final round came down to Pattinson and Hoult, Pattinson would’ve been my choice as well. Hoult has more of a movie villain’s energy about him—a young Harvey Dent in law school, maybe? Think about it, Matt Reeves, you can have that one for free. Reeves, known for movies like Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, can certainly do action movies, but this will be his first spin in the superhero driving seat. May the Batmobile serve him well.
