The Mandalorian and Cassian Andor are making galactic history as the first live action Star Wars series, but as Disney+, Disney’s streaming service, takes off, it’s likely we’ll see more and more. While many are probably being kept under wraps as they’re developed, it’s fun to speculate on the future of Star Wars television, particularly potential live-action shows in the vein of Marvel’s upcoming series.
An Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries would do incredible business for Disney+. There have been rumors swirling about an Obi-Wan movie or series since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, and with Disney+ and the end of the Skywalker Saga on the horizon, now might be the perfect time for Kenobi to get his solo chance to shine. With Disney+, it’s the perfect time to launch a Kenobi miniseries, especially one starring Ewan McGregor. We can’t have the rise of the prequel memes without a good line reading of “Hello there” after all.
With the Old Republic rumored to be the backdrop for a coming film series from Lucasfilm, that is probably off the Disney+ table for a variety of reasons. Instead, we might see several series set between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. There are 30 years of unexplored materials there, and between the rise of the New Republic and the First Order, there is plenty to explore there.
A political show set on Hosnian Prime would help retroactively make us care about the destroyed New Republic and shed some political light on the state of the government before the First Order’s violent coup. On the other side, as much as I don’t need a show with Snoke as a primary character, a show about the founding of the First Order, featuring Rae Sloane in the primary role.
One spin-off series could focus on the Knights of Ren, who were mentioned in The Force Awakens and who might appear in Episode IX. The mysterious knights led by Kylo Ren (who might only play a small role in this hypothetical) helped enforce the First Order’s rule across the galaxy. If they prove to be a fan favorite following a possible appearance in Episode IX, a miniseries focused on who they are and what evils they got up to throughout the galaxy.
A group of X-Wing (or Y-Wing, or B-Wing, any wing really) pilots could also see themselves as the focus of a series. Star Wars fans love pilots, so a series centered on some of the best X-Wing pilots out there could definitely get some traction. Del Rey will be exploring that in upcoming tie-in novel Alphabet Squadron, but maybe if the book does well, we could see the squadron take to the skies on Disney+.
The galaxy is endless, and right now I’m only focusing on the Rebellion and Resistance eras of Star Wars. We could see more Clone Wars era shows, perhaps including one focused on Onderon and Saw Gerrera or one focused on Separatist fighters. There’s the original fight for Mandalore that saw Obi-Wan Kenobi meet Satine Kryze; maybe that could get an animated adaptation if it’s not in the upcoming Master and Apprentice?
And of course, there’s whatever happens after Episode IX. There’s probably plenty of material to be mined from the eventual victory of the Resistance, but what that will look like I cannot say just yet. Maybe a Rey series centered on Rey learning about the ways of the Jedi, or a Resistance series centered on Finn, Poe, and Rose, or maybe the story of how Kylo Ren actually fell to the Dark Side.
Only time will tell what shows will be developed for Disney+, but this is the perfect way to continue on the Star Wars saga without over-saturating the cinematic market. I can’t wait to see where Disney+ and Lucasfilm go next.
