Wonder Woman Was the Most Tweeted-About Movie of 2017

Twitter released their most-tweeted topics in the United States for 2017, and Wonder Woman was unsurprisingly the most tweeted-about movie of 2017. It was crowned the most-tweeted back in June, with 2.19 million tweets, but we had to wait and see if it would hold onto the title as other tentpoles like Justice League hit theaters. (Beauty and the Beast, for example, fell from second to seventh as the year progressed.) And hold on it did!

Unfortunately, Twitter didn’t release the raw numbers, so we don’t know exactly how many tweets it took to become Most-Tweeted overall. These numbers are also US-specific, so I’d be curious to see how all of these movies stacked up internationally.

These rankings also come with the crucial caveat that “most tweeted about” does not necessarily mean “most positively tweeted about.” For example, La La Land took second-place, and while it certainly racked up praise from critics and audiences, there were also plenty of not-so-positive tweets. The Best Picture snafu at the Oscars, in which La La Land was mistakenly named the winner when Moonlight actually took home the prize, caused a massive meme-fest on Twitter, and before the ceremony, there had been plenty of people advocating against La La Land when it was the presumed favorite.

The same likely applies to Justice League, which when coupled with Batman V Superman becomes a Rube Goldberg machine of internet arguments, with fanboys and critics and viewers who just felt “meh” tweeting back-and-forth at each other.

The Top Ten Most Tweeted-About Movies were as follows:

  1. Wonder Woman
  2. La La Land
  3. Dunkirk
  4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
  5. Justice League
  6. It
  7. Beauty and the Beast
  8. Thor: Ragnarok
  9. Black Panther
  10. Fifty Shades Darker

Of course, movies aren’t the only big pop culture conversation-starters on Twitter. The platform also released rankings for TV shows, with Game of Thrones taking an unsurprising first, followed by Stranger Things. The full Top Ten for TV shows were:

  1. Game of Thrones
  2. Stranger Things
  3. Big Brother (wut)
  4. 13 Reasons Why
  5. Saturday Night Live
  6. The Walking Dead
  7. Grey’s Anatomy
  8. The Voice
  9. Supernatural
  10. Pretty Little Liars

Did any of these surprise you? I was personally quite surprised to see how high Dunkirk landed, since there is definitely more Thor: Ragnarok in my own feed, but that’s probably more a reflection of my timeline than Twitter as a whole. Anything you were surprised not to see in the Top Ten?
