The emotional and domestic labor that women are expected to provide for free (while men get to think about themselves and their own needs) often gets taken for granted. In this exclusive clip from the upcoming feminist dark comedy, Bitch, we see what a family might look like if Mom suddenly weren’t around.
Bitch, written and directed by Marianna Palka (GLOW) tells the story of a woman (played by Palka) at the end of her rope. She feels completely stifled as her callous, cheating husband (Jason Ritter) doesn’t care about what she needs, and her ungrateful, obnoxious children take her for granted. When a mysterious dog suddenly starts appearing on their property, the woman’s feelings overtake her and she ends up…becoming a dog. Not magically turning into one, but taking on the behavior of one, ending up in the basement growling and walking around in her own feces.
It’s pretty gross, but it’s also an intriguing interpretation of what happens when a woman is backed into a corner by everyone and everything in her life.
The film then follows the family, who now have to figure out how to go about their day-to-day lives without her, which is seemingly impossible. Like Joni Mitchell said: Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone… This self-obsessed family soon realizes that their wife and mother was the person holding everything together, and was shouldering an unfair burden.
Bitch opens tomorrow in theaters and on VOD.
