We have our most comprehensive look at the upcoming Netflix/Marvel series featuring Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle … and now we know when we’ll get to binge-watch the show.
After Netflix canceled planned events for The Punisher at NYCC in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting massacre, it became unclear when we’d get a release date. At NYCC, reporters speculated that the big-tent events planned for The Punisher meant a near-imminent roll-out, but following the events’ cancellation, I heard some wonder if we’d see the show in 2017 at all.
Well, it turns out that Punisher will arrive pretty quickly: November 17th, just in time to watch without sleeping pre-Thanksgiving or to take home with you to the extended family.
This may seem like an odd choice for Thanksgiving-adjacent entertainment, but it also seems like perhaps Punisher and its creatives are thumbing their nose at DC’s Justice League, which comes out in theaters on the same day. Pick a side, the Punisher seems to be whispering in your ear.
This trailer is a really deep dive for a series that has previously teased us with mysterious Tweets and mere hints at plotlines. You can watch it and practically guess at the arc of the whole show, though I’m sure there are a lot of surprises still to be uncovered. I’ll leave it here spoiler-free in case you wish to remain unspoiled.
I have to admit that my excitement for The Punisher, which has been at a slow burn for a long while, still feels strange at the moment. It’s hard to look at a show and its protagonist so completely centered around America’s obsession with guns. It’s hard to know what to say about America that we only need a little more than a month between horrific incidents to make this sort of entertainment A-OK again. It’s hard not to feel like the featured thumbnail picture on the trailer, with Frank Castle examining his own broken reflection, is something that this country desperately needs to do.
